UCO Splits With Pitt State, Wins Series

PITTSBURG, Kan. - The University of Central Oklahoma split a doubleheader with Pittsburg State Monday, falling short 9-3 in the first game before winning by the same score in the second game of Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play at Al Ortolani Field.

Central Oklahoma is now 27-11 on the season and 19-5 in league play. The latter is good for first place in the league standings. With a win Monday, UCO took the season series against Pitt State 2-1, making the Bronchos a perfect 8-for-8 in MIAA series wins this season.

"I'm proud of the guys for responding today," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "We didn't play well in the first game, we just left too many runners on base to have a chance. But they came out ready to fight in the second game and I'm proud of that. That kind of determination goes a long way."

Central out-hit Pitt State in the first game, 10-7, but stranded 15 runners including leaving the bases loaded in an inning twice.

Gaylon Viney got the start for the Bronchos and by no means had the worst start. He did get dinged for three runs (two earned) on three hits in 3 2/3 innings pitched before Martin went to his bullpen.

J.D. Cameron came on relief of Viney and he allowed three earned in just 2/3 of an inning of work. Tabor Charles then came on and gave up two more in 2/3 of an inning. Drake Harper, Will Olds, and JJ Rogers all came on in relief as well.

UCO still had its chances. Paul Kropf went 2-for-3 with a pair of singles and one run scored. T.J. Sparr was 2-for-5 with a home run. But the runners left on base kept biting the Bronchos. Carson Green scored the other run for the Bronchos.

UCO responded in a big way following the break. In Game 2, Central came out and scored four runs in the first inning.

Jake Dyer led off with a walk, Kyle Miskovsky got hit by a pitch, then Kropf also drew a walk. PSU went to the bullpen after that and the next batter, Dayne Sommer, smacked a 2-RBI double to right center to put the Bronchos up 2-0 with no outs in the top of the first inning.

Glenn Reeves then scored Kropf with an RBI single, and Xavier Freeman did the same to score Sommer and put UCO up 4-0.

Freeman added another RBI single in the top of the third inning to score Sparr and put UCO up 5-0.

Austin Lambright started Game 2 for the Bronchos, and was solid in the effort. He did allow three earned runs, all in the bottom of the third inning. Lambright countered with five strikeouts in six innings of work to improve to 3-0 on the season.

Central scattered nine hits in Game 2. Glenn Reeves' 3-for-5, 1-RBI day led the way. Sommer's double and a triple from Kropf were the only extra-base hits on the day for either team.

UCO's three games in Pittsburg opened an eight-game road trip for the Bronchos. UCO travels to Tahlequah this Wednesday for a game against Northeastern State. The Bronchos play at Emporia State next weekend.
