Bronchos run-rule Washburn to complete sweep

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma baseball team earned its third-run rule of the 2018 season Monday, with a 16-6 win over Washburn in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association competition at Wendell Simmons Field. The Bronchos improved to 8-4 overall and stretched their early season win streak to seven games with the conference win, and sweep of the Ichabods.

"We've been fortunate at the plate to have some guys just really putting together a nice run of at bats," UCO head coach John Martin said. "The guys have a lot of confidence right now at the plate and its paying off for us."

Central plated a season-high 16 Monday. In the three-game MIAA series with Washburn, UCO outscored its Kansan foe 30-10.

Monday, the Bronchos wasted no time finishing off the series sweep. Kyle Miskovsky smacked a one-out single in the top of the first inning, and would score on a Dayne Sommer sacrifice-fly later in the inning. Caleb Peters then hit an RBI single to score Xavier Freeman, and Anthony Alvarez scored both Sommer and Peters with a single of his own.

That made it 4-0 UCO. The Broncho rout had begun.

Central also had a season-high 18 hits Monday. Nine different batters recorded at least one hit. Miskovsky's 4-for-6 day at the plate led the way. He had three RBIs and two runs scored as well.

Justin Brown went 3-for-4, and Jake Dyer, Paul Kropf, and Sommer, all had two hits. Freeman and Kropf hit back-to-back home runs to left field as part of a six-run fourth inning. Those three homers were the only extra-base hits on the day for the Bronchos.

Tyler Culver got the start and dominated on the hill. He struck out eight batters in just four innings of work on his way to moving to 2-0 on the season. Culver allowed four hits and four runs (three earned) and walked two batters. Tabor Charles, Landon Bond, and Drake Harper finished off Washburn in relief, combining for seven strikeouts over the next four innings.

UCO's buys week continues Tuesday. The Bronchos play at Southwestern Oklahoma State at 2 p.m. Central will then hit the road for another MIAA series at Nebraska-Kearney this weekend.
