UCO Splits With Bearcats

EDMOND (April 7) – Pitching ruled the day during a sun-splashed Friday afternoon at Broncho Field, but it wasn't all in Central Oklahoma's favor.

Jayden Chestnut had another dominating outing in leading the Bronchos to a 2-0 first-game win before Southwest Baptist's Claire Miller did the same in the nightcap as the Bearcats prevailed 2-0 to end UCO's season-high nine-game winning streak.

The Bronchos, now 30-8 overall and 10-4 in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play, are back home Saturday for another conference twinbill at noon against Central Missouri.  It's also Senior Day, with UCO's five seniors set to be recognized during an on-field ceremony between the two games.

"We knew Southwest Baptist had some good pitching and they definitely gave us trouble today," head coach Cody White said.  "We came up with just enough offense in the first game, but never really got anything going in the second.  Jayden threw fantastic and is really getting into a groove for us."

Chestnut tossed her second straight one-hitter – and fourth of the season -- in the opener, needing just 91 pitches to notch her 11th complete game.  The hard-throwing sophomore right-hander struck out seven and walked one in stretching her scoreless streak to 17 consecutive innings.

UCO provided the only support Chestnut needed in the third inning.

Morgan Heard and Carrie Abrams started things with back-to-back one-out singles, then JoBi Heath walked to load the bases.  Tori Collet fouled off three straight two-strike pitches to keep her at bat alive before dropping a bloop single down the right field line to score Heard and Carli Jones followed with a sacrifice fly to plate Abrams with the second run.

Pitching and defense did the rest.

Chestnut retired the first 13 batters she faced before giving up a one-out single in the fifth.  SBU drew its lone walk to start the seventh, but second baseman Mo Selman started a double play to erase that runner and Chestnut got the final out on an easy fly ball.

Heard, Abrams and Lexi Watson came through with key defensive plays for the Bronchos.  Watson made a terrific grab on a hard-hit line drive down the line at third base in the third, while Heard showed her range at shortstop in getting a groundout on a shot up the middle and center fielder Abrams ran down a drive to right-center in the fourth.

It was the sixth straight shutout for the Bronchos, the longest such streak since a school-record 10 in a row back in 1986.

Peyton Walker started the second game in the circle and threw five shutout innings – giving UCO an amazing string of 41 consecutive frames without a score – before SBU finally broke through for the only two runs of the game.  A walk, triple and single accounted for all the scoring by the Bearcats.

The Bronchos were held to a season-low two hits by Miller, who also struck out 10.

Heard and Brooke Zukerman had UCO's two hits, with Heard getting a bloop single in the fourth and Zukerman a double off the center field wall in the fifth.  Both hits came with one out, but Miller struck out two straight batters in both innings to leave the Bronchos scoreless for just the second time this season.

Walker took the tough-luck loss despite giving up just five hits in  5 1/3 innings.  Abbie Lancaster pitched the final 1 2/3 innings, allowing one hit.
