Late Rally Puts Bronchos In MIAA Finals

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. (April 28) – Mo Selman's run-scoring double capped a three-run sixth-inning rally that propelled Central Oklahoma past upstart Northwest Missouri 4-3 Friday afternoon in the winner's bracket finals of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Postseason Tournament.

The No. 21-ranked and top-seeded Bronchos trailed the sixth-seeded Bearcats 3-1 entering the sixth before surging in front and Jayden Chestnut put NWMSU down in order in the top of the seventh to secure the win.

UCO improved to 46-9 – tied for the second-most wins in school history – with its seventh straight victory and advanced to Saturday's 11 a.m. finals against Emporia State.  The Bronchos beat the eighth-seeded Hornets 3-0 Thursday in the first round of the tournament.  An "if necessary" game is slated for 1:30 p.m. if Emporia State wins the first game.

"We were down, but we were never out and this team is not about to give up," head coach Cody White said.  "We had some great at bats in the sixth and made some things happen.  It was a big win for us, but there's still work to do tomorrow."

Carli Jones ignited the late comeback, energizing UCO's dugout and crowd with a one-out home run.  The sophomore slugger blasted the first pitch she saw, easily clearing the fence in straightaway center field for her second homer of the tournament and ninth of the season.

Brooke Zukerman followed with a triple to right-center field, just beating the tag with a headfirst slide into third, and a gutsy squeeze bunt call tied the game.  Ashleigh Tramel laid down a perfect bunt toward the pitching circle and the fleet-footed Zukerman scored easily to make it 3-3.

Then it was Selman's turn and the sophomore second baseman responded, driving a 0-1 pitch into the right-center field gap that enabled speedy pinch-runner Kaitlynn Monckton to race around with the go-ahead run.

Chestnut polished off her 14th straight win with two fly outs and a ground out in NWMSU's final turn at the plate.  The sophomore right-hander didn't walk a batter and struck out six while allowing six hits in improving to 21-3.

Selman, Zukerman and Tori Collet had two hits apiece for the Bronchos, who finished with nine hits on the day.

The Bearcats put together four straight two-out hits in the third to take a 2-0 lead, with UCO getting a run back in the bottom of that frame on JoBi Heath's RBI single up the middle.

A solo homer put NWMSU up 3-1 in the fourth and it stayed that way until the dramatic finish.
