Bronchos Open MIAA Tourney With 3-0 Shutout

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. (April 27) – JoBi Heath and Carli Jones had two hits apiece to spark Central Oklahoma to a 3-0 triumph over Emporia State Thursday in the first round of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Post-season Tournament the ASA Hall of Fame Complex.

The No. 21-ranked Bronchos, who were awarded their regular season league trophy prior to the start of the tournament, improved to 44-9 with their fifth straight win.  UCO moves on to face Missouri Western later Thursday in the second round.

The eight-team double-elimination tournament continues all day Friday before concluding with Saturday's finals.

Heath and Jones both went 2-for-3 with one run batted in to lead an eight-offensive attack.

Peyton Walker and Jayden Chestnut teamed up for UCO's 25th shutout of the season, which broke a tie with the 1986 team for the most in school history.

Walker gave up three hits and three walks while striking out one in starting and going the first five innings to earn the win, improved to 22-5.  Chestnut picked up her fourth save by going the final two innings and fanned three, including the final two batters after ESU had put runners on second and third with one out.

The Bronchos broke a scoreless deadlock in the fourth with a single run, thanks to the savvy running of Heath.  The sophomore outfielder ripped a one-out double off the left field fence and charged home on Jones' two-out single up the middle, barely eluding the tag with a head-first slide around ESU's catcher.

Heath was also at the center of UCO's second run in the fifth, coming through with a clutch two-out RBI single.  Mo Selman led off that inning with a single and went to second on Lexi Watson's base hit before both advanced on Morgan Heard's sacrifice bunt.

Selman was put out at home on Carrie Abrams' grounder to first base for the second out, but Heath came through with a single to right field to plate Watson and make it 2-0.

It became a 3-0 lead in the sixth when Brooke Zukerman poked a one-out single to right field and easily raced home when Ashleigh Tramel followed with a double down the left field line.
