Conference Champs!

PITTSBURG, Kan. (April 24) – Ashleigh Tramel belted a seventh-inning home run to break a tense scoreless deadlock and catapult Central Oklahoma to a thrilling 1-0 first-game victory over Pittsburg State here Monday, giving the No. 22-ranked Bronchos the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association regular season championship.

UCO came back with a 4-1 win in the nightcap to complete the doubleheader sweep, capping a perfect 4-0 weekend for head coach Cody White's crew.  The Bronchos finished the regular season 43-9 overall and took the conference crown with a 22-4 mark in winning the MIAA title for the first time since 2013.

"I'm so proud of this team and what they were able to do the last two days in winning the conference championship," said White, now 165-66 in his fourth year at the helm.  "To win four straight games on the road against two quality teams says a lot about our team.

"We're excited about being conference champions, but there's still a lot to work to do this season."

The Bronchos picked up crucial back-to-back 3-0 shutouts over Missouri Southern Sunday to clinch at least a tie for the league title and set up Monday's showdown with second-place Pittsburg State.

The Gorillas needed a sweep to earn a share of the championship, but UCO took care of that in the first game on Tramel's game-winning homer and Jayden Chestnut's continued dominance in the pitching circle.

Tramel's third homer of the season was the lone score in the dramatic opener that featured a brilliant pitcher's duel between Chestnut and PSU's Emmie Robertson.  The two aces gave up a combined nine hits while striking out 21 and took turns overwhelming hitters.

The Bronchos finished with five hits, getting a 2-for-2 performance from Carrie Abrams.  Tramel's hit was by far the biggest, with the senior slugger sending a one-out, 3-1 pitch over the left field wall in the seventh to snap the tie.

The Gorillas came through with a one-out double in the bottom of the seventh, but Chestnut quickly put down that threat with back-to-back strikeouts to end the game.  The sophomore star gave up just four hits and one walk while fanning nine in recording her eighth shutout and second in two days.

It was the 12th straight win for Chestnut, who improved to 19-3 on the season.

UCO also tied a school record with its 24th shutout of the season, equaling the mark set by the 1986 team.

Robertson, the reigning MIAA Pitcher of the Year, struck out 12 in falling to 28-6.  She's the NCAA Division II leader in wins and earned run average (0.75).

There was no such drama in the nightcap as the Bronchos scored single runs in the first three innings to take quick control.

Tori Collet had a two-out RBI double in the first to put UCO in front for good, Brooke Zukerman scored on an error in the second after leading off with a single and stolen base and the Bronchos added another run in the third on Carli Jones' bases-loaded groundout.

PSU scored its lone run in the fifth, but UCO answered that in the seventh when Morgan Heard singled, went to second on a wild pitch and came home on JoBi Heath's single through the left side.

Heath and Collet had two hits apiece to lead a nine-hit attack.  Peyton Walker went the distance in the circle, scattering seven hits while walking one and striking out four as she improved to 21-5.

The Bronchos return to action Thursday in the MIAA Post-season Tournament that will be held at ASA Hall of Fame Complex in Oklahoma City.  Top-seeded UCO will face eighth-seeded Emporia State at 5 p.m. in one of four first-round games.

Tournament play continues Friday and concludes Saturday, with the tournament champion earning an automatic berth into the NCAA Division II national tournament.
