UCO Clinches Share Of MIAA Title

JOPLIN, Mo. (April 23) – Central Oklahoma clinched at least a share of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association championship with a doubleheader sweep of Missouri Southern here Sunday, using a pair of late rallies to pull out back-to-back 3-0 shutouts.

The No. 22-ranked Bronchos scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning of the opener to break a scoreless tie and then tallied all three runs in the final two frames of the nightcap to complete the dramatic sweep.

"We pulled out two big wins at the end and I couldn't be more proud of the way this team performed in the clutch," head coach Cody White said.  "They were both tough, hard-fought games and we found a way to get it done at the end.

"Our pitching was great in both games and we came up with some big hits in key situations.  It will be a battle tomorrow, but we're looking forward to the challenge."

The Bronchos end the regular season Monday with a 2 p.m. twinbill at Pittsburg State.  UCO improved to 41-9 overall and 20-4 in the league in wrapping up its sixth straight 40-win season.

The Gorillas swept Northeastern State Sunday and are second in the standings at 41-13 and 18-6.  The Bronchos will secure the outright conference crown with a split, while PSU needs a sweep to earn a tie for the title.

Jayden Chestnut had another dazzling performance in the opener as the sophomore standout continued her late-season pitching dominance.  Chestnut hurled a complete-game one hitter and didn't walk a batter while striking out 11.

It was the fourth consecutive start with 10-plus strikeouts for Chestnut, who improved to 18-3 with her 11th straight win.  She retired the first 17 batters she faced before giving up her lone hit, a two-out single in the sixth inning.

UCO's offense was stymied until the seventh when the Bronchos pushed across all three of their runs.

Lexi Watson started things with a one-out single to center field and went to third on Morgan Heard's double to center before scoring the go-ahead run with a single on Carrie Abrams' single through the left side.

Head came home on JoBi Heath's fielder's choice to make it 2-0 and UCO completed the scoring on a bases-loaded walk to Carli Jones.

Heard, Abrams and Jones had two hits apiece to lead the offense.  Heard's seventh inning double was the 57th of her stellar career, breaking the previous mark of 56 held by Kacie Edwards.

The second game was equally as tense, with Peyton Walker escaping a pair of jams in the early innings before the Bronchos finally broke through at the end.

UCO got on the scoreboard in the sixth when Heard had a one-out single through the middle, went to second on Abrams' bunt second and took third on a walk to Heath before scoring on Tori Collet's sacrifice fly.

Mo Selman gave the Bronchos breathing room in the seventh, following Lauren Kelley's pinch-hit double with her second home run of the season.

Walker improved to 20-5 on the year with six innings of work, scattering six hits while striking out two and walking two.  Chestnut came on the seventh to earn her third save, striking out two of the three batters she faced.

UCO now has a national-best 23 shutouts on the season, needing one more to tie the single-season school record of 24 set back in 1986.
