UCO Blanks Eagles Twice In Sweep

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. (Feb. 26) – Peyton Walker and Jayden Chestnut had overpowering performances in the pitching circle to propel No. 13-ranked Central Oklahoma to a pair of shutouts of Oklahoma Christian here Sunday afternoon.

The dominating duo gave up four hits apiece and each threw exactly 100 pitches, with Walker going the distance in a 3-0 first-game victory before Chestnut threw all seven innings in a 4-0 second-game whitewashing.  It was only the third time in the four-year history of OC's Tom Heath Field that the Eagles had been swept at home.

"Peyton and Jayden both threw really well today," said head coach Cody White, whose team improved to 9-3.  "They had great command of their pitches and our defense did a great job behind them.  We didn't do a lot offensively, but we came up with some clutch hits in key situations."

Walker didn't give up a hit until the fourth inning of the opening in tossing her fifth shutout of the season.  The junior right-hander walked two and struck out three in improving to 6-1.

UCO managed just five hits, but did enough in the third and fourth innings to score the only runs of the game.

Mo Selman led off the third with a walk and stole second before going to third on Carrie Abrams' one-out single through the left side.  JoBi Heath then followed with a line-drive double to the right-center field gap that scored both runs to make it 2-0.

The Bronchos pushed across their final run in the fourth.  Carli Jones reached second on an error to start the inning, pinch-runner Kaitlynn Monckton swiped third and later scored on Morgan Heard's bloop single to left field.

Abrams had two of UCO's five hits.

Chestnut earned her first win of the season in the nightcap, evening her record at 1-1.  The hard-throwing sophomore right-hander fanned seven and walked just one.

Heard sparked the Bronchos with a 4-for-4, two-run, two-RBI performance at the plate.

UCO built its 4-0 lead with single scores in four different innings, highlighted by solo home runs in the final two frames.

The Bronchos broke a scoreless tie in the third when Heard doubled off the left field wall, stole third and eventually trotted home when Lexi Watson drew a two-out, bases-loaded walk.

Heard's run-scoring single made it 2-0 in the fourth.  Jones walked to start the inning, with pinch-runner Monckton moving to second on a sacrifice bunt and third on a fly out before scoring on Heard's bloop base hit to right field.

UCO's final two runs came via the long ball.  Brooke Zukerman belted a line-drive shot that barely stayed fair down the left field line in the sixth and Heard led off the seventh with a smash – her team-high fifth of the year – off the foul pole in left.

The Bronchos don't play again until opening Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association action against Washburn on Monday, March 6.  UCO will host that doubleheader at ASA Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City.
