Emporia Tops Bronchos

EDMOND (March 7) – Short-handed Central Oklahoma fell behind early and never recovered in falling to Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association rival Emporia State 11-4 Saturday afternoon at Wendell Simmons Field.

The Bronchos were without three starters and several other key players who missed the game after being suspended for violating team rules and six pitchers weren't able to keep the defending league champion Hornets at bay.

"It's always frustrating when you lose any game, especially in conference," head coach Dax Leone said.  "It's even more disappointing when have to suspend players for off the field issues.  Either way, we have built this program on integrity and I was proud of the players who competed today."

ESU scored two runs in the top of the first to take a lead it would never relinquish, though UCO's deficit was only 3-2 through four innings before the Hornets took control with a four-run fifth inning uprising.

Isaac Hellbusch's run-scoring single had the Bronchos within 2-1 after one inning and Dylan Tinkler's massive solo homer in the bottom of the fourth made it 3-2 before ESU took control with four runs in the fifth and two in the sixth.

UCO's final runs came on Hellbusch's two-run homer in the eighth.

Hellbusch, Tinkler and Ethan Elroy had two hits apiece for the Bronchos.

The Bronchos, now 4-8 on the season and 1-4 in the league, host Emporia for a 1 p.m. twinbill Sunday before the teams end the four-game series with a single nine-inning contest at noon Monday.
