Hellbusch Powers UCO Past Lions

EDMOND (March 20) – Isaac Hellbusch ignited an offensive assault that carried streaking Central Oklahoma to a 16-3 pounding of Lindenwood Friday afternoon at Wendell Simmons Field.

The junior designated hitter smacked a home run and two doubles in driving in seven runs, with his seventh inning grand slam ending the game early on the 10-run rule.

It was the sixth straight win for the Bronchos, who reached the .500 mark (10-10) for the first time this season while moving to 6-6 in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play.

"I thought we had some really good and tough at bats today," head coach Dax Leone said.  "A lot of unselfish team offense all day long."

The four-game series continues Saturday with a 1 p.m. doubleheader before concluding with Sunday's 1 p.m. single contest.

UCO also got a stellar outing on the mound from Dennis Morelli, who scattered seven hits while walking two and striking out three in going the distance to even his record at 2-2.

"Dennis was once again the story with his command and tempo," Leone said.  "He pitched in thirds and made some quality pitches early when momentum was still up in the air."

The Bronchos never trailed after breaking on top 3-0 in their initial at bat as Hellbusch had a two-run double and eventually scored on an error.

The Lions came back with two runs in the second, but UCO answered that with two of its own in the third when Hellbusch ripped another RBI double and again ended up scoring on an error.

Central broke the game open with a five-run volley in the fifth.  Jacob Borrego had the big hit with a three-run double to center field and Dilon Argo added a two-run double to push the lead to 10-2.

LU got its final run in the top of the seventh, but the Bronchos ended the game in their half of the inning on Hellbusch's grand slam.

Tyler Hatcher, Jake O'Brien and Dylan Tinkler drew consecutive walks to lead off the inning before Hellbusch capped his big game with a no-doubt shot to left-center field for his sixth homer of the season.

Hellbusch went 3-for-4 with five runs scored in addition to his seven RBI.  Borrego drove in four runs with a pair of hits and Josh Ingram also had two hits as UCO finished the game with 12.
