OKLAHOMA CITY (Sept. 7) – Kristen Wilson and Zuela Adom combined for 36 kills as Central Oklahoma captured its fourth straight win with a four-set triumph over Oklahoma City Tuesday night at Abe Lemons Arena.
The Bronchos prevailed 25-23, 19-25, 25-17, 25-11 to improve to 4-1 on the young season, dominating the last two sets after the two teams had split the first two.
“We got off to a slow start and didn't stick with a game plan early, but we did a much better job in the last two sets and played pretty well down the stretch,” UCO coach Jeff Boyland said. “It was a good win for us and we're making progress.”
Wilson had eight of her match-high 19 kills in the opening set and added 15 digs, while Adom overcame a slow start to finish with 17 kills and four blocks. The Bronchos also got five kills from Taylor Summers, 21 digs from Ginger Gowen, five blocks and three kills from Jessica Legako and 42 assists and three blocks from Fleming Smurthwaite.
UCO needed a late surge to rally for the first-set win, with Gowen serving up back-to-back aces and Wilson making three kills to spark a closing 9-2 spurt that carried the Bronchos.
The Stars looked in control after taking a 21-16 lead before an OCU service error starting a 6-0 UCO run that turned the set around. Gowen followed with her aces to make it 21-19, Courtney Whitlow and Legako had consecutive kills at the net and Wilson a laser shot down the middle to give the Bronchos a 22-21 lead.
A service error tied it at 22-all, but another Wilson kill and Smurthwaite's solo block on two-time All-American Xiatong Ma gave UCO a 24-22 lead. The Stars scored to stay alive, then Wilson ended it with her eighth kill of the set.
The second set was back-and-forth throughout the early going and it was tied at 16-16 after a Wilson kill before OCU went in front to stay with a 4-1 run en route to taking the win and evening the match.
The Bronchos seized command in the third set with a 9-3 scoring spree that turned a precarious 13-12 lead into a commanding 22-15 bulge. The Stars came back with a pair of points to make it 22-17, but Wilson had consecutive kills and Legako a solo block to end it.
Summers had two early kills to stake UCO to a quick 6-2 lead in the fourth set and Wilson had two kills and an ace during a 7-0 run that made it 17-7. Adom took over from there, collecting five kills and a block as the Bronchos won going away to finish off the match.
