WEATHERFORD, Okla. (March 6) – Home runs by John Bryant and Luke Yost sparked carried Central Oklahoma to a first-game victory and a doubleheader split with Lone Star Conference rival Southwestern Oklahoma here Saturday.
The Bronchos overcame a 5-0 deficit in claiming a 14-12 win in the opener before the Bulldogs rebounded to take the nightcap 11-7.
It was UCO's second straight doubleheader split with SWOSU, with the Bronchos now 7-7 on the year and 5-7 in the league.
UCO trailed 5-0 through five innings of the first game before erupting for 11 runs on nine hits in the top of the sixth.
Bryant had the biggest blow in that outburst with a grand slam, while Ryan Schoonover drove in three runs with a single and double. The Bronchos also got run-scoring hits from Luke Yost, Arrow Cunningham and Casey Bruns.
The Bulldogs came back with three runs in the sixth and three in the seventh to tie it 11-11 before UCO went back on top with three runs in the top of the eighth.
Yost put the Bronchos in front 13-11 with a two-run homer and Schoonover's RBI single made it 14-11. SWOSU got a run back in the bottom of the eight, but UCO held on.
The Bronchos finished with 15 hits, getting a 4-for-4 outing from Bryant. Schoonover and Yost had three hits apiece and Cunningham added two, with Yost also picking up the pitching win in relief.
UCO used a six-run third inning uprising to take a 7-1 lead in the nightcap, getting a two-run single from Kade Kauk and RBI hits from Cunningham and Yost in that big inning.
The Bronchos led 7-2 after four innings before SWOSU exploded for nine runs in the fifth to go in front 11-7 and that's the way it ended.
Bruns and Kauk had two hits each to lead the offense.
