EDMOND (Feb. 28) -- Complete-game pitching outs by Ryan Wagner and Brent Miller gave Central Oklahoma a Lone Star Conference doubleheader sweep of Texas A&M-Kingsville Sunday afternoon at Broncho Field.
Wagner went the distance in the opener, giving up four hits as the Bronchos rallied for a 4-3 victory, while Miller tossed a five-hit shutout in an 11-0 second-game rout that saw UCO end the scheduled nine-inning contest after seven on the 10-run rule.
The Bronchos evened their overall record at 5-5 and improved to 3-5 in the league with the sweep in earning a four-game series split with the Javelinas.
“Ryan and Brent both threw the ball really well and we got a couple of wins we really needed,” UCO coach Wendell Simmons said. “Both of them did a great job of mixing up their pitches and challenging hitters.”
The Bronchos trailed 3-0 entering the fourth inning of the first game before Luke Yost got UCO on the board with a solo home run and the senior slugger added a sacrifice fly in the fifth to score Taylor Brown, who had doubled and gone to third on a balk.
Taylor Brown tied it in the sixth with an RBI single and the Bronchos took a 4-3 lead when Ryan Schoonover was hit by pitch with the bases loaded. Wagner then put TAMUK down in order in the seventh to close out the game.
Wagner struck out four and walked four in going the distance.
UCO broke a scoreless tie in the third inning of the second game with two runs in the third as Taylor Brown had a run-scoring single and it became a 3-0 lead in the fourth on Jordan Mullin's RBI single.
The Bronchos upped it to 6-0 in the fourth when Corey Hawk had an RBI single, Arrow Cunningham a sacrifice fly and Schoonover a steal of home, with another Taylor Brown RBI single and Schoonover sacrifice fly pushing the advantage to 8-0.
UCO ended the game with a three-run seventh, getting a two-run single from Yost and RBI hit from Cody Cole.
Yost and Cunningham had three hits apiece to lead a 15-hit attack, while Taylor Brown, Kade Kauk and Mullin each had two.
Miller walked just one and fanned five in his impressive seven-inning stint while scattering five hits.
