No. 5 Bronchos Batter Southern Nazarene

Emily Deramus Drove In Six Runs As UCO Wins 9-1 and 9-0

EDMOND – Emily Deramus sparked an extra-base assault that carried Central Oklahoma to a pair of run-rule romps over Southern Nazarene Tuesday evening at Gerry Pinkston Stadium.

Deramus belted two doubles and a home run while driving in six runs as the No. 5-ranked Bronchos battered the Crimson Storm 9-1 and 9-0, with both games ending after five innings. Ten of UCO's 18 hits in the sweep went for extra bases, including four homers.

It was the final home games of regular season for the Bronchos, who improved to 39-6 in running their winning streak to 12 straight. UCO returns to MIAA play Thursday at Central Missouri before playing at Washburn Friday.

"I thought we played pretty well in all phases today," head coach Cody White said. "We had the bats going pretty good, our pitching was solid in both games and we made some big-time defensive plays. I was proud of how we came out and took care of business."

UCO got complete-game pitching outings from Shelby Beard and Sydney Ward, with both allowing just three hits.

Beard walked four and struck out five in the opener. SNU scored its only run of the day in the top of the first inning and never threatened again against the sophomore right-hander, who improved to 12-2 with her fifth complete game.

The Bronchos answered quickly in the bottom of the first with a three-run volley. Rylee Anglen got things going with a one-out double to center field, Terin Ritz tied it with a run-scoring single through the left side and Deramus put UCO on top with a blast over the left field wall for her eighth homer of the season.

Central added to its lead in the second. Macie Andrews walked to lead off and Brooklyn Ryan followed with a double down the right field line before Rylee Lemos' sacrifice fly and Kennedy Clark's RBI groundout made it 5-1.

Andrews drove a run-scoring single up the middle in the third and the Bronchos scored three more in the fourth.

Lemos led off the inning with a no-doubt shot to right-center for her 10th homer, with Deramus' sacrifice fly and Mackenzie Fithian's RBI single pushing the cushion to 9-1.

Beard then put the Crimson Storm down in order in the top of the fifth to finish off the rout.

UCO scored in every inning in the nightcap as well, starting with a pair of runs in the first.

Lemos led off with a triple to right-center and raced home on Clark's short flyout, then Ritz and Deramus ripped back-to-back doubles. Anglen's two-out RBI single in the second upped the lead to 3-0.

The Bronchos went deep twice in the third to make it 6-0.

Ritz opened the inning with a first-pitch bomb to straightaway center field for her 15th homer of the season – and the seventh in the last eight games. Ariah Mitchell followed with a single to right, then Kya Watson lofted a high fly ball that cleared the fence just inside the left field foul pole for her third homer.

UCO completed the scoring with three more runs in the fourth.

Anglen had a one-out single to center and Clark walked before Deramus drove a two-out, full-count pitch to the gap in left-center field for a two-run double. Mitchell's RBI single up the middle made it 9-0.

The Bronchos got splendid defensive plays from Deramus at shortstop and Ryan in center field during the game.

Deramus gunned down a runner at the plate after getting a relay throw from Ryan and she threw out another runner at home after fielding a hard-hit grounder on a bases-loaded situation. The speedy Ryan tracked down a ball in deep center field and made a diving catch to prevent an extra base hit.

Anglen, Ritz, Deramus, Mitchell and Watson had two hits apiece to lead an 11-hit attack, with Deramus driving in three runs for the second game of the day.

Ward tossed her fourth shutout of the season, giving up three hits in a 79-pitch outing to improve to 9-2.
