Senior Day Celebration Sees Record-Setting Sweep

UCO Stuns Fort Hays State, Scores 20 Runs In Game 2 Blowout

EDMOND – A Senior Day celebration started early and lasted all afternoon as No. 5 Central Oklahoma swept Fort Hays State in an MIAA doubleheader at Gerry Pinkston Stadium Saturday.

UCO won 3-1 in Game 1, with an eight-strikeout complete game gem from Terin Ritz, who started the day with a two-run home run in the bottom of the first inning. Then UCO went for history in Game 2. Trailing 1-0, a 13-run second inning set the tone for a 20-1 blitzing of the FHSU Tigers.

"Really happy for our seniors," UCO head softball coach Cody White said. "We played good, got two wins, got the chance to put all our seniors in the game, which is hard to do when 4 of 5 of them are pitchers. Good day overall and we'll celebrate this group and then get ready for the next one. We have a tough midweek next week."

Central Oklahoma's 20 runs are the most since 2015 when the Bronchos put up 21 against Southern Nazarene, which visits Edmond for the midweek non-con Tuesday afternoon. The 20 runs are the third-most in a game by the Bronchos. Saturday's 19 RBIs in Game 2 is a school record.

Ritz's two-run home run gave UCO a 2-0 lead against Hays in Game 1. Kya Watson added an RBI single to score Sherri Mason in the fourth inning, and FHSU got a late RBI single in the top of the seventh inning to make it 3-1.

Kennedy Clark went 2-for-2 with a double in Game 1. Ritz finished 2-for-3 with the homer. She struck out eight batters in seven innings, allowing only the one run in the seventh. She gave up five total hits in the game.

White used all available players in the Game 2 rout as the Bronchos pelted 18 hits in the game, including seven extra-base knocks.

Ritz led the way again, going 3-for-3 with a home run, a double, two RBIs and four runs scored. Rylee Anglen went 2-for-4 with two doubles, two RBIs, and two runs scored. Clark was 2-for-3, Emily Deramus was 2-for-3, and Brooklyn Ryan was also 2-for-3.

Ryan had a big day at the plate, with a career-high six RBIs.  Rylee Lemos and Brooklyn Lyles both had a hit and an RBI.

Shelby Beard picked up a pinch-hit solo home run in her first career plate appearance. Makenzie Fithian and Macie Andrews also had hits in the high-scoring affair.

Senior Jordyn Pipkin picked up the win in Game 2, throwing three innings, allowing only one hit – the solo homer in the first – and one walk. She struck out four batters on the day. Senior Sydney Ward came on to pitch the fourth and Senior Kaylee Bradley pitched the fifth, allowing one hit and striking out one batter.

Game 2 got out of control in the bottom of the second inning with Central Oklahoma trailing 1-0.

Ritz led off with an infield single, beating out a groundball to shortstop. Deramus followed with a double to score Ritz and tie the game. Watson walked after that and Fithian reached on an error by the FHSU right fielder, a dropped fly ball that allowed Deramus to score the go-ahead run.

Andrews laid down a bunt single to load the bases, then Ryan singled to right field, getting two RBIs before another defensive error allowed her to get to second base. Lemos followed with a single to center, scoring Andrews. Anglen then doubled to center to score Ryan and Lemos and give UCO a 7-1 lead.

Fort Hays made a pitching change, then Clark singled to the pitcher to put runners on the corners for Ritz, who was hit by a pitch in her second plate appearance of the inning.

Deramus followed with an RBI single to score Anglen, then Watson flied out to right for the first out of the inning. Fithian drew a bases-loaded walk to score Mason, then Andrews lined out to the pitcher for the second out of the inning.

Ryan stepped up next and turned on a pitch, driving it just over the fence 200-plus feet down the left field line for a grand slam, scoring Ritz, Deramus, and Fithian before she touched home to make it 13-1.

The Bronchos added four more in the third. Ritz started it with an RBI double to left center to score Anglen. Fithian singled through the right side to score Kindal Biggs. Mari Scott then singled to score Ritz. And Lyles finished it off with an RBI single to score Fithian and push UCO's lead to 17-1.

In the fourth, Ritz blasted her second home run of the day over the scoreboard in left field. Beard followed with a solo homer. And Scott singled again to score Watson, pushing the final tally to 20-1.

Ritz has now homered in six consecutive games and has 14 on the season. She went 8-for-11 this weekend with four home runs, two doubles, seven runs scored and six RBIs.

Central Oklahoma hosts Southern Nazarene Tuesday, with a doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m. at Gerry Pinkston Stadium. UCO is two weeks from the end of the season. The Bronchos travel to Washburn and Central Missouri next weekend before a trip to Newman the following weekend.

The 2025 MIAA Softball Championship, a 10-team, single elimination tournament, is scheduled for April 30 – May 3 at Fort Hays State.
