Clark Lifts Bronchos To Sweep of Nebraska-Kearney

UCO Takes Opener 11-0 Before Winning 5-4 In Final Inning

EDMOND – Kennedy Clark's run-scoring single in the bottom of the seventh inning lifted Central Oklahoma to a 5-4 second-game victory and a doubleheader sweep of MIAA rival Nebraska-Kearney Friday afternoon at Gerry Pinkston Stadium.

Terin Ritz and Emily Deramus belted back-to-back home runs in an 11-0 run-rule rout in the opener before the No. 5-ranked Bronchos survived UNK's upset bid in the nightcap.

Macie Andrews and Rylee Anglen drew walks while Rylee Lemos had a bloop single in the seventh as the Bronchos loaded the bases with one out before Kennedy came through, drilling a shot off the first baseman's glove for the game-winning hit.

UCO improved to 35-6 on the season and a league-best 14-2 with its eighth consecutive victory. The Bronchos are back home Saturday for a noon twinbill against Fort Hays State on Senior Day, with Ritz, Kaylee Bradley, Jordyn Pipkin, Layne Smith and Sydney Ward to be recognized before the first game.

"We struggled to get much going offensively in the second game, but stayed patient and Kennedy had a big hit for us," head coach Cody White said. "I don't know if we had a letdown or what after swinging the bats so well in the first game and that's something we can't afford to do. We have to stay locked in for every game."

UCO managed just four hits in the second contest, with two of those coming in the seventh.

Ritz had the first hit, blasting a lead-off homer – her 12th of the season -- to right-center field in the second. The Bronchos didn't need a hit in the fourth, using three walks and Kya Watson's sacrifice fly to make it 2-0.

The Lopers scored once in the top of the fifth, but UCO answered in its half of the inning. Andrews was hit by pitch to start things, Rylee Lemos slammed a one-out RBI triple off the right fall wall and Anglen followed with a sacrifice fly to up the advantage to 4-1.

UNK rallied with three runs in the sixth to tie it and it stayed that way until the faithful seventh.

Ritz earned her second pitching win of the day in relief, improving to 12-2. She threw the seventh after starter Shelby Beard went the first 5.2 innings and Jordyn Pipkin got the final out of the sixth.

UCO had no trouble disposing of the Lopers in the first game.

The Bronchos went down in order in the first inning, then scored four runs in the second, four more in the third and three in the fourth to end the game early.

Lemos had a two-run single, while Brooklyn Ryan and Anglen added RBI hits in the second to put UCO in control and the Bronchos broke it open in the third.

Ritz opened the inning with a high fly ball over the center field wall and Deramus followed with another homer, this one a first-pitch line-drive shot to left-center. Andrews added an RBI single and Anglen a sacrifice fly as the lead grew to 8-0.

Central added to that in the fourth. Ritz led off with a double to left, Deramus ripped an RBI single to left and Watson banged a triple off the right fall wall before Makenzie Fithian's sacrifice fly ended the scoring.

Ritz needed just 58 pitches to get through the first four innings, giving up one hit and striking out four, before Kaylee Bradley struck out two in the final frame. Deramus went 3-for-3 and Ritz and Watson had two hits apiece to lead the offensive assault.
