Central Sweeps Day One In Branson

Bronchos Beat Truman State, Missouri S&T At Branson Showtime Classic

BRANSON, Mo. – No. 13 Central Oklahoma opened the Branson Showtime Classic Friday with a pair of wins, beating Truman State 8-6 before a 12-4 six-inning run-rule of Missouri S&T.

The Bronchos improved to 16-3 on the season with the wins. UCO plays two more in Branson Saturday, taking on former MIAA foe Lincoln at 2:30 p.m. and Northern Sun member Winona State at 4:30 p.m.

"It was good to get two wins today," UCO head coach Cody White said. "It probably wasn't our best softball, but we got it done. It's been a long week, but we need to be better tomorrow and finish off what has been a really good week for us."

UCO had to go back and forth with Truman State Friday. The Bulldogs led 2-0 in the first and 3-0 in the second before a big response by the Bronchos.

Mackenzie Fithian drew a leadoff walk, Sherri Mason singled, and Rylee Lemos walked to load the bases. Rylee Anglen reached on a fielder's choice and Fithian was out at home, but Kennedy Clark was hit by a pitch on the next at bat and Mason scored to get UCO on the board, 3-1.

Terin Ritz followed in a big way. The senior slugger smacked a grand slam to put UCO ahead 5-0. She started the game in the circle and had given up three runs on four hits. Sydney Ward came on in the third and then gave up a two-run home run as TSU tied the game, 5-5.

The Bronchos put it away in the fourth. Anglen singled, Ritz got on getting hit by a pitch, then Emily Deramus doubled to score Anglen and give UCO the 6-5 lead. Ariah Mitchell followed with a double of her own and earned two RBIs as Ritz and Deramus scored to make it 8-5.

Truman State got one more run in the fifth to make it the final, 8-6.

Ward finished with the same numbers, three runs on four hits, as Ritz, in five innings of work. Ritz struck out two in two innings. Ward struck out three.

In Game 2 Friday, Central Oklahoma jumped on Missouri S&T in the top of the first inning. Lemos and Anglen led off with doubles, Lemos scoring on Anglen's hit. Anglen scored when Ritz reached on an error, then Kya Watson pelted a three-run home run to give UCO an early 5-0 lead.

Kennedy Clark scored Brooklyn Ryan with a sacrifice-fly in the second inning to extend the lead to 6-0.

MST got back in the game for a moment with a grand slam in the bottom of the fourth inning, pulling to within two, 6-4, but UCO answered back with three home runs to put it away.

Deramus hit a two-run shot to left field in the fifth inning to make it 8-4. Lemos hit a homer to right in the sixth to make it 9-4. Then Deramus hit another, this one to center and for three RBIs, to make it 12-4.

Shelby Beard finished off MST in the sixth and improved to 9-0 this season. Friday she allowed four runs on four hits, but the sophomore from Dickson, Oklahoma struck out career-high 11 batters.

Central Oklahoma takes on Lincoln and Winona State Saturday before returning home. The Bronchos open MIAA play with Pittsburg State and Missouri Southern March 7-8 in Edmond.
