Central Takes Series From Washburn

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma baseball team beat Washburn 12-3 in the final game and rubber match of the two institution's three-game MIAA series at Wendell Simmons Field Saturday.

The Bronchos won 5-3 Friday before falling short 6-4 Saturday afternoon. In the nightcap, the Bronchos hit early and often in getting the big win.

"When we can get our bats going, we're pretty good," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "Our pitching was solid and when we start hitting the ball and gaining confidence, things start to work out in our favor."

Garrett Takamatsu led Central with three hits Saturday, including a three-run home run. He was 3-for-4 with three RBIs and also scored three runs. Kyle Crowl added just as much. He went 2-for-3 with two RBIs – both from solo homers – and also scored three runs in the game. Ryan Harrel joined those two with a multi-hit game, going 3-for-5 with an RBI.

Zac Freeman, though he finished 1-for-6, was key too. In a six-run fourth inning by the Bronchos, Freeman's grand slam made an emphatic statement and gave UCO a big lead it would never let go of.

UCO scattered 13 hits in the game. Philip Scott, Shane Nixon, Bennett Laurence and Chase Freeman each had a hit as well.

Brayden Nelson got the start for the Bronchos and was in line for the win before being pulled after 4 1/3. Nelson allowed three runs on six hits but didn't walk any batters and struck out four. A double and a home run in the top of the fifth ended Nelson's day just a bit shy of five complete innings.

Colton Croft relieved Nelson and he did get the win after an effective 1 2/3 innings of work. Croft allowed two hits but no runs or walks. He also struck out two.

Kyler Patterson, Jake Terry and Jacob Bailey each threw one inning to finish the game off. Each recorded at least one strikeout with Bailey notching a pair of Ks.

Central Oklahoma will take a break from conference play with a midweek matchup at Oklahoma Christian in Oklahoma City. The Bronchos then return home for a three-game MIAA series with Northwest Missouri next weekend. UCO hosts the Bearcats Saturday, April 10 in a doubleheader and will play the third and final game Sunday, April 11.
