Bronchos Outpace Southeastern

DURANT, Okla. - The University of Central Oklahoma baseball team shrugged off an early deficit and poured it on late in a 17-11 triumph over Southeastern Oklahoma State Tuesday.

Central scored five runs in three different innings and five players had multiple hits.

Shane Nixon and Philip Scott both had three hits Tuesday. Nixon, the leadoff, went 3-for-5 with a grand slam and a pair of singles. He scored four runs. Scott, who hit second in the lineup, went 3-for-6 with a double and had one RBI. He scored twice.

Kyle Crowl hit third and he went 2-for-5 with two runs scored and one run batted in. Joe Mondragon hit cleanup and went 1-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored.

The top four hitters in the lineup for 9-for-20 with nine RBIs and 10 runs scored.

Central Oklahoma used the bulk of its bullpen Tuesday to get the job done on defense.

Hunter Freese got the start and threw just the bottom of the first inning. Central used nine pitchers Tuesday and eight of them went one inning or less.

Colton Croft earned the win in the game. He was third on the bump and threw three scoreless and hitless innings. He also struck out three batters.

Central led 1-0 Tuesday after Mondragon scored Nixon with an RBI single up the middle. But SOSU answered with three runs in the bottom of the first to take an early lead. Central trailed 6-1 after two innings.

But after two more scoreless innings, the offense came alive.

With the bases loaded in the fifth, Mondragon was hit by a pitch and Ryan Harrel scored. Cacy Harper followed with a double to right field that cleared the bases, scoring Scott, Crowl and Mondragon, and bringing the Bronchos to within a run, 6-5.

Bennett Laurence added an RBI single later in the inning to scored Brett Hopkins and tie the game.

UCO added five more in the sixth to take command.

Scott singled and scored Harrel, before two bases loaded free passes gave the Bronchos two more runs. Mondragon walked and Nixon scored. Kameron Kilchrist was hit by a pitch and Scott scored.

Hopkins then singled up the middle to drive in Crowl and Mondragon and give Central an 11-6 lead.

Crowl tacked one more on in the seventh with an RBI single to right center that scored Nixon.

In the eighth, the Bronchos would put up a five-spot for the third time in the game.

With Garrett Takamatsu on first, Laurence on second, and Hopkins on third, Harrel singled through the right side to score Hopkins.

And with the bases still loaded, Nixon unloaded. The junior second baseman launched a home run to left to give the Bronchos a 17-6 lead.

SOSU added a grand slam of its own in the eighth and one more in the ninth, but the Bronchos closed the door on its third straight win.
