UCO Takes Game 2 With Late Rally

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma baseball team scored more than half its runs in its final inning at the plate and came away with an 11-9 win over Northwest Missouri in the second of a three-game series at Wendell Simmons Field.

Central Oklahoma, which lost 12-8 earlier in the day Saturday, improved to 13-11 with the win and the Bronchos are now 9-8 in the MIAA. The third game of the league series is scheduled for Sunday at 1 p.m.

UCO scored a pair of runs in the seventh inning to whittle down a 9-3 deficit before exploding for six runs in the bottom of the eighth to take the lead and the win. Central Oklahoma had a single, a double, and a triple to earn two runs in the seventh before four hits, four walks, and a hit batter earned UCO six runs in the eighth.

Blake Bautz picked up the win for the Bronchos and is now 2-0 on the season. The relief pitcher came in and threw just one inning before UCO's big eighth. Beaux Bonvillain then stepped on the mound for the ninth and earned his third save of the season.

Central Oklahoma gave one up in the top of the first but answered with two more in the bottom half. Shane Nixon led off with a single to the NWMSU shortstop but was out on the next play when Philip Scott reached on a fielder's choice. After Kyle Crowl popped up to short, Joe Mondragon laced a ground-rule double to right center to put two on with two outs. Kameron Kilchrist followed and he singled through the right side to score both Scott and Mondragon.

In the bottom of the third, still leading 2-1, Scott singled to center field. He moved to second on a wild pitch, third on a Crowl groundout, and then scored on another wild pitch to give the Bronchos a 3-1 lead.

But Northwest scored the next eight runs to go ahead 9-3 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning.

Kaden Marshall led off the inning with a single to third before Nixon and Scott both flied out. Crowl then followed with an RBI triple to center field and Mondragon followed that with an RBI double to right center. That made it 9-5.

In the eighth, Mason Carrier led off with a single up the middle before Brett Hopkins drew a walk and Marshall was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Nixon then singled through the left side to score Chase Freeman, who pinch ran for Carrier. Freeman's run made it 9-6.

Scott was next and he delivered, smashing a 3-RBI double to right center, clearing the bases and tying the game, 9-9, with one out in the inning.

Crowl followed Scott with a single through the left side to put runners on the corners. Then Mondragon walked to give the Bronchos another bases loaded opportunity. This time, Kilchrist delivered – by way of a walk – and Scott scored the go-ahead run. Hopkins added an RBI walk of his own to score Crowl and give the Bronchos an 11-9 lead.

Central Oklahoma scattered 14 hits in Game 2 Saturday. Five Bronchos had more than one hit and the first four batters in the UCO lineup had a combined 10 hits.

Crowl and Mondragon both had a game-high three hits. Crowl was 3-for-5 with two runs scored and one RBI and hit his first triple of the season. Mondragon went 3-for-3 with two doubles, a run scored and one RBI. Nixon went 2-for-5 with a run and an RBI and Scott was also 2-for-5 with a double, three runs scored and three RBIs.

Kilchrist was 1-for-4 with three RBIs and Carrier went 1-for-3. Marshall went 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

Grant Larson got the start for the Bronchos and a no decision Saturday. He threw six innings, allowed seven hits and four runs – three earned – while striking out five. Jacob Bailey threw 1/3 of an inning and allowed five runs on two hits and four walks.

Owen Logan threw 2/3 of relief work and struck out one batter to get the Bronchos out of the seventh. Bautz came on in the eighth and got a 1-2-3 inning with two groundouts and one pop-up. Bonvillain did issue one walk but had three strikeouts in his one inning of work.
