Central Takes Series From Northwest

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma baseball team took the season series from Northwest Missouri with a 7-3 win Sunday afternoon at Wendell Simmons Field.

Kyle Crowl, Philip Scott and Shane Nixon each hit home runs and Brayden Nelson struck out five in a 5 1/3 inning start to spark a Central Oklahoma squad that led early and never looked back.

"Today was how coaches draw it up," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "The guys really competed. Our pitching was really good and our guys battled at the plate and did some good things. Now we just need to do it again next time out."

Crowl went 4-for-5 with a home run, a double, and a pair of singles. He also had three RBIs and scored two runs. Scott was 3-for-5 with a home run, a double, and a single. He had one RBI and scored two runs. And Nixon went 2-for-5 with a homer and a single. He scored twice and had one RBI.

That trio made up the 1-2-3 hitters in the Broncho lineup Sunday and went a combined 9-for-15.

UCO had 13 hits in the game Sunday. Kameron Kilchrist was also 2-for-4 with a single and a double. Mason Carrier and Bennett Laurence added one hit apiece. Laurence joined Crowl, Scott and Kilchrist with a double.

Nelson started and improved to 5-0 this season with the win. The senior righty from Piedmont, Oklahoma threw 5 1/3 innings, struck out five batters, and allowed three runs on eight hits and a walk.

Kyler Patterson threw 1 2/3 innings of relief work and did give up two hits and a walk, but no runs. Jake Terry threw a scoreless eighth and Jacob Bailey threw a scoreless ninth, including striking out the last two batters.

UCO got its lead early. Nixon led off the bottom of the first with an infield single and after Scott flied out to right field, Crowl smashed a two-run homer to straightaway center to give the Bronchos an early advantage.

Central added one more in the bottom of the third to go up 3-0. That was Scott's solo shot down the left field line.

Northwest put one back on the board in the top of the fifth, but Central had an answer. Nixon led off with a solo homer to left to make it 4-1. After a pitching change and a couple of outs, UCO worked the bases loaded and Crowl scored when Laurence drew a walk.

Northwest then got two more in the top of the sixth to cut the lead to two, 5-3, but again, the Bronchos responded.

Crowl's double down the left field line scored Scott to make it 6-3 in the bottom of the sixth. Cacy Harper added a pinch-hit sacrifice fly that scored Kilchrist in the bottom of the seventh. That made it the final, 7-3.

Central Oklahoma will break from conference play for a midweek at Southeastern Oklahoma State. The Bronchos then continue a road trip to Central Missouri for a three-game MIAA series in Warrensburg, Mo. next weekend.
