UCO Takes Second Game In Fort Hays Series

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma baseball team swept a doubleheader with Fort Hays State Saturday afternoon, winning 7-5 in the second game at Wendell Simmons Field. The Bronchos won 8-4 earlier in the day.

"We don't like that we gave up some runs we shouldn't have, but overall it was good to get two wins," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "We played well and we'll try to finish it off tomorrow."

Game 3 of the three-game MIAA series is scheduled for Sunday at 1 p.m.

Kyler Patterson, celebrating his 24th birthday, was dazzling in picking up a career-high 11 strikeouts. He set the tone for the Bronchos to take an early lead and never look back.

Brendan Ezell opened the scoring in the second game Saturday, pelting a solo home run over the fence in right center. It was not only the first career homer for Ezell as a Broncho, but also the first hit in Bronze & Blue for the Oklahoma City native.

Central added one more in the third. Ryan Harrel led off the bottom of the third with a double down the right field line. He moved up to third on a Philip Scott groundout and scored on a wild pitch after that to give the Bronchos a 2-0 lead in the game.

Central made its biggest push in the bottom of the fifth. Harrel singled with one out and Scott singled right after him. Brett Hopkins then singled to score Harrel and give UCO a 3-1 lead. And after Garrett Takamatsu was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Kyle Crowl lined out to left field but earned a sacrifice fly that scored Scott to make it 4-1. Hopkins later scored on a wild pitch to make it 5-1.

Ezell scored again in the sixth to make it 6-3, UCO. Hopkins grounded out with the bases loaded to score Ezell. The Bronchos picked up one more in the eighth when Harrel scored on a wild pitch.

Fort Hays added two more in the top of the ninth but Beaux Bonvillain closed out the game and picked up his first save of the season to push the Bronchos to 3-2.

Central scattered 11 hits in Game 2, after posting 13 hits in the first game. The Bronchos were led by Harrel, who went 4-for-4 with three runs scored. Hopkins also had multiple hits, going 2-for-5 with a run scored. Scott, Takamatsu, Crowl, Mondragon, and Ezell each had one hit.

Patterson finished with 5.2 innings pitched, three runs allowed, and a career-high 11 strikeouts. Jacob Bailey added 1.2 innings of relief work and Bonvillain did as well. Bailey struck out three and Bonvillain picked up four strikeouts of his five outs. Central's 18 strikeouts are tied for the third most in a single game in UCO history. It's also the 14th time the Bronchos have struck out at least 15 since Martin became the head coach six years ago.

Central Oklahoma is scheduled to wrap up the three-game series Sunday at 1 p.m.
