Central Rally Is Too Little Too Late

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma baseball dropped the third game of its MIAA series with Fort Hays State Sunday, falling 12-9 in a high-scoring affair at Wendell Simmons Field.

Central Oklahoma is now 3-3 on the season and has a 2-1 record in league play.

"We didn't play well today and that's about it," UCO head coach John Martin said. "We made it close in the end, but we dug ourselves into a hole. We've got a lot to improve on. We've got to get better. We'll move on from this and look to the next one."

In a back-and-forth matchup, Central went down 1-0 in the top of the second inning but answered with three more in the bottom half to go ahead. But Hays answered that with a three-run inning of its own and took a lead it wouldn't surrender.

The Bronchos did reach double digits in strikeouts for the fifth time in six games to start the season, but UCO also issued 10 walks in hampering its own efforts.

Grant Larson took the loss in the game and is now 1-1 on the season. The lefty from San Diego, California threw 4 1/3 innings, allowing eight hits and six runs. He only walked one and struck out six batters.

Joe Mondragon slapped an RBI single up the middle of the infield in the bottom of the second inning to score Garrett Takamatsu and tie the game 1-1. Zac Freeman then singled through the right side to load the bases before a Fort Hays State balk added one more run in the inning. Kyle Crowl scored on that play. Ryan Harrel added an RBI groundout to second base that scored Mondragon and gave UCO a 3-1 lead.

Trailing 10-3 in the bottom of the sixth, Cacy Harper blooped an RBI single into right field that scored Brett Hopkins, who led off the inning with a single of his own.

UCO was down 12-4 in the eighth when Bennett Laurence reached on a fielder's choice that scored Takamatsu, who singled earlier in the inning.

Central made it interesting in the ninth, putting up four runs to turn a seven-run deficit into only three. And then had a chance to cut it to one when Harper struck out to end the game.

Before that, Harrel led off with a single and Philip Scott walked. Then Colton Bertus singled to load the bases. Kaden Marshall then reached on a fielder's choice that scored Harrel to make it 12-6. Takamatsu followed that with a sacrifice fly to right field that scored Scott to make it 12-7. Crowl smacked a two-run home over the fence in right center to make it 12-9. Brenden Ezell drew a walk before Harper's final at bat.

Central scattered 11 hits Sunday. Bertus, Takamatsu and Crowl each had two. Eight Bronchos had at least one.

Bertus went 2-for-5 from the two-hole Sunday. Takamatsu was 2-for-3 with one RBI and two runs scored. Crowl went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored. He had a double and a home run. Hopkins, Mondragon, Harper, Freeman and Harrel each had one hit.

Central Oklahoma will now turn its attention to a non-conference matchup with Southern Nazarene Tuesday at 5 p.m. at Wendell Simmons Field. The Bronchos return to conference play next weekend with a trip to Emporia State scheduled for Friday.
