Central Wins MIAA Opener

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma baseball team won its MIAA opener 8-4 over Fort Hays State Saturday afternoon in the first game of a doubleheader at Wendell Simmons Field.
 
Central Oklahoma improved to 2-2 with the win.
 
"We settled down a lot after the last couple of games," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "We played a lot better. We need to play like that and keep getting better."
 
Central standout Luke Anderson earned the win after throwing six solid innings. The second-year junior from Olathe, Kansas threw six innings, allowed five hits and no runs while striking out seven. Anderson also walked three but kept Hays off the scoreboard.
 
Cacy Harper's two-run home run in the bottom of the fourth sparked the UCO offense that scattered 13 hits in the game.
 
Kyle Crowl smacked a double in the bottom of the second inning and later scored when Zac Freeman hit a triple to left field. That made it 1-0, Central.
 
Harper scored Joe Mondragon with his two-run bomb to left field. Mondragon led off the bottom of the fourth with a bunt single.
 
Still leading 3-0 in the bottom of the seventh, Central rallied to put some comfort in its lead and did so all with two outs.
 
Brett Hopkins drew a walk before Garrett Takamatsu singled up the middle. After Crowl drew a walk of his own, Mondragon added an RBI single that scored Hopkins to make it 4-0. Harper then drew a bases loaded walk to earn his third RBI of the day and UCO was up 5-0.
 
Freeman then got to three RBIs himself with a single to shortstop that scored Mondragon and Crowl and gave UCO a 7-0 lead.
 
Colton Croft replaced Anderson in the seventh, but in the eighth, he loaded the bases before the Bronchos went to Ethan Wayland, who surrendered a grand slam that made it 7-4.
 
Hopkins scored for the second time in the game in the bottom of the eighth to bring the score to its final, 8-4.
 
Croft finished with 1.2 innings of work, allowing just two hits and two walks and three runs. He also struck out three batters. Wayland threw 1.1 innings, allowed one hit and one run and made two strikeouts.
 
Harper was just 1-for-3 with the two-run home run to go with three RBIs. Scott finished 2-for-5, Crowl went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and one RBI. Mondragon and Freeman both had a team-high three hits.
