UCO Drops Series Finale With Pitt

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma baseball team lost 10-5 to Pittsburg State Sunday afternoon, wrapping up the three-game MIAA series at Wendell Simmons Field.

Central never led in an offensive showcase game that saw over 30 base hits.

"We weren't sharp on the mound today and we didn't have enough offense to keep pace," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "We got some help out of the bullpen for most of the middle of the game, but they're big rally early was too much and then we just let them tack it on in the end."

Grant Larson took the loss for the Bronchos. The senior lefty threw just 2 2/3 innings and allowed seven hits and five earned runs while registering just two strikeouts.

Pittsburg State started the top of the second with a solo home run to take a 1-0 lead, then added two more later in the inning on an RBI single and a sacrifice fly.

Central responded well though, scoring two more in the bottom of the second. The Bronchos got a leadoff single from Philip Scott and a walk from Brett Hopkins before Colton Bertus slapped a two-out RBI single to center field to score those two.

But just as soon as UCO responded, Pitt State did too in the top of the third. PSU plated two more runs in the inning on an RBI groundout and an RBI double to take a 5-2 lead. The game stayed that way till the top of the sixth when Pittsburg State made it 6-2.

UCO finally started to chip away at the lead after that, scoring once in the sixth and twice in the seventh. After Bertus was hit by a pitch with two outs in the bottom of the sixth, Joe Mondragon tapped an RBI double down the left field line to score Bertus and make it 6-3.

In the bottom of the seventh, Bennett Laurence hit a two-out RBI single up the middle to score Scott, who walked earlier in the inning. Kameron Kilchrist was up next in a pinch-hit move by the Bronchos and he added a single through the left side that scored Laurence to make it 6-5.

UCO unfortunately could not continue its rally and ended the inning with the bases loaded. Central left 13 runners on base Sunday afternoon.

Jacob Bailey relieved Larson in the third and was solid in his outing. The righty threw 5 1/3 and only allowed one run on six hits. He also had seven strikeouts.

Colton Croft came in the top of the ninth but gave up four runs on three hits and didn't register an out. Jake Terry finished the game for the Bronchos, giving up one hit and striking out two batters.

Kyle Crowl had three hits on the day, finishing 3-for-5 with three singles. Scott also had a three-hit day, finishing 3-for-4 with a double, two singles, and one walk. Scott also scored two runs. Bertus gave UCO three batters with multiple hits. He finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs and one run scored. He was hit by a pitch twice in the game.

Central Oklahoma will take a quick break from conference play with a midweek matchup against East Central in Ada, Oklahoma this Tuesday before resuming MIAA play next weekend against Washburn back at Wendell Simmons Field.
