Homers Fuel UCO Rout

EDMOND (March 23) – Shayla Harper collected four hits and four runs batted in to fuel a Central Oklahoma assault that carried the No. 23-ranked Bronchos to a 13-5 first-game romp over Arkansas Tech Tuesday afternoon.

UCO belted four home runs in the contest, getting a pair of solo shots from Hazel Puempel along with two-run drives from Harper and Jacee Minter to highlight a 13-hit attack.

Harper finished 4-for-5 to lead the way, while Minter, Puempel and Mikayla Rutland had two hits apiece. The Bronchos improved to 15-6 heading into Tuesday's nightcap.

ATU grabbed a quick 1-0 lead in the top of the first, with the Bronchos getting that back in the second when Puempel led off with a no-doubt shot over the fence in right-center field.

The Golden Suns went back ahead with a solo score in the top of the third, but UCO answered that in the bottom of the frame with a six-run volley to take control.

Harper started the inning with a single to center field, Brighton Gilbert walked and Minter followed with an RBI single up the middle to tie it.

Puempel walked to load the bases and then UCO scored three runs without touching the ball. Allie Eicher and Halley Randolph drew free passes to force in runs and Lexy Dobson was hit by pitch to pick up an RBI.

Harper capped the big outburst with her second hit of the inning, this one a two-run double down the right field line that made it 7-2.

The Bronchos added two more runs in the fourth to move ahead 9-2. Puempel smacked her second homer of the game – this one a shot to left field – and Rutland added a run-scoring single to left that scored Lexy Dobson, who had reached on a doubled to right-center.

ATU got three runs back in the top of the fifth and again Central responded right back behind a couple of big flies.

Harper continued her hot hitting, leading off the inning with a deep blast way over the left field wall. Gilbert followed with a bloop double to left and Minter smacked a drive to center field that easily cleared the fence for a two-run shot that made it 12-5.

UCO ended the game on the eight-run rule in the sixth when Harper finished off her four-hit performance with an RBI single up the middle.

Kylee Lynch started in the circle and went the first five innings to pick up the pitching win, improving to 7-3.
