Bronchos Blast Golden Suns

EDMOND (March 23) – Amelya Huggins belting a grand slam in the sixth inning to give No. 23-ranked Central Oklahoma a 12-2 run-rule rout of Arkansas Tech in the second game of Tuesday's non-conference doubleheader at Broncho Field.

Shayla Harper and Jacee Minter also homered for UCO, which beat the Golden Suns 13-5 in the opener. The Bronchos, now 16-6 on the year, had four homers in that contest and finished the day with 23 hits.

"That's about as well as we've played all season," said head coach Cody White, whose team is 10-0 at home this season. "We really swung the bats today. Everyone stayed aggressive at the plate and it paid off for us."

Huggins, Harper and Lexy Dobson had two hits apiece to lead UCO's 10-hit attack. Harper enjoyed a fantastic afternoon, finishing 6-for-9 with two homers and seven RBI in the two games.

ATU broke on top 1-0 in the top of the first inning, but the Bronchos got that run back in its first at bat when Minter's two-out fly ball to right field bounced off the top of the fence and over for a solo homer.

Central went ahead 2-1 in the second, though the Bronchos failed to take full advantage of a bases-loaded, no-out situation. Three consecutive walks filled the bases for Harper, who plated one run when her fly ball to short center field dropped in for a hit, but ATU escaped further damage with a force-out at home and two strikeouts.

UCO made up for it in the third, breaking the game open with a five-run eruption.

Allie Eicher drew a lead-off walk and went to second on a wild pitch before racing around to score on Dobson's single to second base. Another wild pitch moved Dobson to second and she trotted home on Mikayla Rutland's double to the left-center field gap.

Rutland scored on an error after Huggins' infield single and the red-hot Harper capped the big inning with a first-pitch blast that easily cleared the fence in right-center field for a two-run homer that made it 7-1.

The grew to 8-1 in the fifth when Shayleigh Odom reached second on an error, went to third on a groundout and scooted home on Brighton Gilbert's base hit up the middle.

The Golden Suns scored once in the sixth, but UCO ended it in the bottom of that frame on Huggins' blast. Eicher reached on a fielder's choice, Dobson singled and Rutland walked to load the bases for Huggins, who cleared them and ended the game with a shot to right-center field.

Corrina Rivas picked up the pitching win, giving up three hits and one run in the first five innings. She struck out one and walked three in moving to 8-2 on the season.

Central resumes Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play Friday with a 2 p.m. home doubleheader against Lincoln.
