Central Slips At Southwestern

Bronchos Fall To Bulldogs In Non-Conference Clash

WEATHERFORD, Okla. – The University of Central Oklahoma baseball team lost 5-4 in a non-conference game at Southwestern Oklahoma State Monday afternoon.

The Bronchos are now 1-2 on the young season and are scheduled to play again this weekend at home.

"We didn't do enough today," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "We did a good job of limiting them to just four hits but we didn't get enough out of our guys. We need to get better. We've got some work to do."

Central Oklahoma fell behind early Monday and despite tying the game late, couldn't overcome SWOSU.

Southwestern plated two runs in the bottom of the first and another in the bottom of the second. It wasn't until the third when the Bronchos finally answered.

Zac Freeman led off with a single and Philip Scott followed with one of his own. A sacrifice fly by Garrett Takamatsu made it 3-1.

Trailing 4-1 in the fifth, UCO had another response. Freeman led off reaching on a fielding error by the SWOSU catcher, then stole second before advancing to third on a Scott groundout. He would score on a wild pitch moments later to make it 4-2.

UCO finally tied the game in the top of the sixth. Kyle Crowl led off with a walk before Joe Mondragon smacked an RBI triple down the right field line to score his teammate and make it 4-3.

Mason Carrier came into the game as a pinch hitter and he registered an RBI with a groundout to the second baseman that scored Mondragon and tied the game, 4-4.

Southwestern then went back in front in the bottom half of the sixth, 5-4. UCO had two on and nobody out in the top of the seventh but couldn't produce a run. The Bronchos also had two on with two outs in the top of the ninth but came up short.

Central Oklahoma used six pitchers Monday.

Jacob Bailey got the start and went three innings, allowing three runs. Only one was earned though. Bailey struck out one batter. Colton Croft came on and threw the fourth and fifth innings, striking out three while allowing one run on one hit.

Brady Smith faced one batter and walked him. The SWOSU player would later score. Ethan Wayland made his Central debut and threw one inning of work, allowing one hit that scored the runner Smith walked. Wayland also had one strikeout in the inning.

Brayden Nelson came on to pitch the bottom of the seventh and did give up a leadoff single before getting a double play after that and one more groundout to get out of his inning unscathed.

Kyler Patterson got his turn in the eighth. He struck out the first batter he faced, got the next to ground out, then struck out another. The latter though reached on a wild pitch, but Patterson struck the next guy out to get out of the inning and give Central a chance in the ninth.

Garrett Takamatsu finished the game 2-for-3 with an RBI and Mondragon went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Freeman, Scott, Brett Hopkins and Kameron Kilchrist each had one hit in the game.

Central Oklahoma is scheduled to take on Fort Hays State this weekend. The Bronchos will play two games Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. before a Sunday matinee wraps up the series.
