UCO Rolls Over Crimson Storm

EDMOND (Feb. 5) – Brighton Gilbert had three hits to pace Central Oklahoma's offensive assault as the Bronchos closed out the UCO Softball Classic with a 10-2 run-rule romp over Southern Nazarene Friday afternoon.

The win finished off a perfect 4-0 season-opening weekend for UCO, which is slated to be back at home next weekend for three games in the Broncho Invitational.

"We got off to a great start and came out with a good win," said head coach Cody White, whose team jumped out to a 7-0 second-inning lead. "It was fun to finally get on the field and play. We didn't play particularly well overall, but we made a lot of progress and found out things we need to work on."

The fleet-footed Gilbert had a single, double and triple in a 3-for-4 outing at the plate to lead a 10-hit attack while also scoring three runs. Hazel Puempel and Lexy Dobson added two hits apiece.

Kylee Lynch picked up the pitching win, striking out two and allowing two runs in 4 1/3 innings to improve to 3-0. Rookie Isie Cox didn't allow a hit in the final 1 2/3 innings in her collegiate debut to finish out the game.

The Bronchos jumped on top 2-0 in their initial at bat, getting run-scoring hits from Puempel and Dobson.

Gilbert got things going with a one-out bunt single and she went all the way to third on the play when SNU made two errors. The left-hand hitting Puempel sliced a single to left field to score Gilbert and Dobson followed an out later with a hard-hit double to the left-center field gap to make it 2-0.

UCO broke it open an inning later with a five-run outburst, highlighted by Tarin Dubler's home run.

Allie Eicher led off with a double to the left-center field gap and went to third on a groundout before Audrie Morrison walked. Eicher scored as part of a delayed double steal, then Dubler lofted a deep fly ball that just stayed fair in soaring over the left field wall.

Gilbert kept the inning going with a triple to left-center field and back-to-back walks to Puempel and Jacee Minter loaded the bases for Dobson, who cranked a two-run single up the middle to push the cushion to 7-0.

The Crimson Storm scored their lone two runs in the fifth and then UCO ended the game early with three runs in the sixth.

Morrison drew a lead-off walk and scored when Gilbert's fly ball to shallow center field dropped in for a double. Puempel followed with an RBI triple to right-center field and she came home with the game-ending run on Tori Ritz's fielder's choice.
