Fast-starting Bronchos Cruise

EDMOND (Feb. 21) – Halley Randolph's three-run home run highlighted a big first-inning outburst that put Central Oklahoma in control and the unbeaten Bronchos went on to cruise past Colorado Christian 9-1 Sunday evening to end first-day play in the UCO Softball Festival.

UCO exploded for eight runs on just four hits in the bottom of the first to take quick command and ended the game after five innings on the eight-run rule. The Bronchos, now 5-0, return to action Monday with a 12:30 p.m. contest against Chadron State.

Kylee Lynch went the distance in the pitching circle, giving up just three hits while striking out two and walking none. The second-year freshman lost her shutout bid in the fifth when CCU hit a solo homer and needed just 63 pitches to improve to 4-0.

"We really didn't know what to expect since we haven't been able to do much the last couple of weeks with the weather, but we came out and played well," said head coach Cody White, whose team last competed on Feb. 6. "Halley and Allie (Eicher) had a couple of big hits for us in the first inning to help us get off to a great start and Kylee threw another great game."

Central paraded 12 batters to the plate in its first at bat to take all suspense out of the game.

Tarin Dubler got things going with a lead-off walk and ended up scoring the game's first run on Hazel Puempel's one-out single to left-center field. Amelya Huggins drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 2-0, then Eicher ripped a two-run double off the wall in left-center.

Randolph followed with her first homer since the 2019 season, blasting a 2-0 pitch over the 220-foot mark in center field. The three-run shot gave the senior catcher 117 career runs batted in, moving her into 10th place on UCO's all-time list.

Dubler reached on a two-out error to keep the inning going, went to second on a wild pitch and scored on Brighton Gilbert's single up the middle to complete the eight-run uprising.

The Bronchos didn't score again until the fourth when Jacee Minter drew a lead-off walk and eventually scored from second on a double play to make it 9-0.

UCO finished with just five hits while taking advantage of six walks. Puempel went 2-for-3 to lead the offense.
