Dobson Lifts UCO Past Aggies

EDMOND (Feb. 4) – Lexy Dobson delivered a game-winning sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 10th inning to catapult Central Oklahoma to a thrilling 9-8 victory over Cameron Thursday night on the first day of the UCO Softball Classic.

The never-say-die Bronchos scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings and scored once in the bottom of the ninth to again extend the game before finally ending it in the 10th to finish off a 2-0 day in the first games of the 2021 season.

"We didn't play particularly well, but we found a way to get it done," head coach Cody White said. "We made a bunch of silly mental mistakes and put ourselves in some bad situations, but this team just refused to lose."

Hazel Puempel was placed on second to start the 10th as part of the international tiebreaker and she quickly moved to third on Halley Randolph's pinch-hit sacrifice bunt. Dobson came through one out later, sending a deep fly ball to right field that allowed Puempel to race home and give UCO the win.

Brighton Gilbert went 4-for-5 to lead Central's 10-hit attack, while Taylor McKittrick had two hits. Kylee Lynch picked up her second pitching win of the way with seven innings of relief work.

The Aggies scored once in the top of the second to break on top early, but UCO answered with two runs in the bottom of that frame.

Amelya Huggins reached on a fielder's choice and Allie Eicher followed with a two-out single to center field before both came home on McKittrick's triple to the right-center field gap.

The Bronchos limited CU to one run on four bloop hits in the third, with Puempel's sliding catch in right field saving another score, and the Aggies scored one more in the fourth to go up 3-2.

Central regained the lead in the fifth with the help of a big error.

Tarin Dubler and Gilbert started a two-out rally with back-to-back singles, then Puempel lofted a high fly ball to left-center field that Cameron's left fielder dropped. Dubler and Gilbert scored easily, while the speedy Puempel managed to race around the bases and slide safely into home to give UCO a 5-3 advantage.

The lead didn't last long, however. The Aggies strung together four hits, Central helped with a key error and CU scored four runs in the top of the sixth to move in front 7-5.

The Bronchos forced extra innings with a bottom-of-the-seventh rally. McKittrick led off with a line-drive double to left field, Audrie Morrison ripped a triple down the right field line to make it 7-6 and Gilbert's one-out single through the left side tied it.

Cameron went back ahead in the eighth with a run and again UCO answered. This time it was Dubler coming through with the big hit as the junior second baseman drilled a two-out RBI double off the wall in left field to make it an 8-8 deadlock.

The Bronchos return to action Friday with two more games, taking on Ouachita Baptist at 12:30 p.m. and then finishing the two-day event against Southern Nazarene at 3 p.m.
