UCO Rolls Past Chadron

EDMOND (Feb. 22) – A bunch of walks and a few timely hits were all Central Oklahoma needed to subdue Chadron State 9-1 Monday afternoon on the second day of the UCO Softball Festival.

The unbeaten Bronchos (6-0) used nine walks and six hits to register their third straight run-rule victory. UCO's first four batters drove in all nine runs, with Brighton Gilbert and Hazel Puempel collecting three RBI apiece while Tarin Dubler had two and Jacee Minter one.

"I thought we showed great patience at the plate today," head coach Cody White said. "We didn't try to force anything and were able to take advantage of the good pitches we got. It's great to be back on the field after not being able to play the last couple of weeks."

Corrina Rivas and Bailey McKittrick teamed up in the pitching circle, with Rivas going the first four innings to pick up the win in improving to 2-0 before McKittrick threw the final inning. Rivas allowed four hits and one run while striking out one and walking one.

Chadron scored an unearned run in the top of the first inning to break on top, but the Bronchos answered back with two runs in their first at bat before taking control with three runs in the second and three more in the third.

Puempel made it 2-1 with one swing of the bat in the bottom of the second when the senior slugger ripped a line-drive home run to straightaway center field to score Minter, who had drawn a two-out walk.

The Eagles helped UCO's cause in the third, issuing four walks and hitting a batter as the Bronchos scored three times. Allie Eicher had the lone hit in the inning with a one-out double, while Dubler was hit by pitch with the bases full and Gilbert and Puempel drew bases-loaded walks.

Central stretched its advantage to 8-1 in the third behind Gilbert's two-run single through the right side and Dubler's RBI single up the middle and the Bronchos ended the game on the eight-run rule in the fifth.

Shayleigh Odom opened the fifth with a bloop double to left-center field, then Dubler was hit by pitch again and Gilbert walked to load the bases. Odom then trotted home with the game-ending run when Minter lofted a long sacrifice fly to center field.

The Bronchos are scheduled to hit the road for the first time this weekend, going to No. 25-ranked Lubbock Christian for a Saturday doubleheader before moving on to West Texas A&M for a Sunday twinbill.
