Central Facility Spotlight: CHK | Central Boathouse

The University of Central Oklahoma athletic department is home to some of the finest facilities in the country. Over the past five years, construction projects have taken place that physically transformed the face of the campus. We're taking a closer look at each of those facilities each Wednesday over the next several weeks.

This week's focus, the CHK | Central Boathouse.

The Central Oklahoma rowing team calls the CHK | Central Boathouse its home on the banks of the Oklahoma River in downtown Oklahoma City. The boathouse, built in 2015, is an 18,000-plus square foot facility with a near $6 million price tag. It stands as one of the finest in the country.

The boathouse, like many others in the country, is not a shared home for the rowing team and any other clubs and organizations. It is the exclusive home of Central Oklahoma rowing.

With its completion in March 2015, the CHK | Central boathouse became the third boathouse on the shores of the Oklahoma River. This incredible facility is Central's home on the water and accommodates all of UCO's rowing needs.

Equipped with enough boat bay storage for Central's rowing shell needs, an upstairs erg room, training room, locker rooms, coaches' offices, and meeting spaces, the boathouse is a world class home for the rowing team. Designed by Elliot and Associates, the Central/CHK boathouse provides a modern, cutting edge facility to both Oklahoma City and UCO communities alike.

The Central Oklahoma rowing program has just 13 years to its history, but the young program, the youngest of all of Central's 14 varsity sports, wasted no time in becoming the premier program in the country.

The pinnacle of the program's success followed the opening of the boathouse.

Central Oklahoma has won the NCAA Division II national team championship in back-to-back years, 2018 & 2019, has been the No. 1 ranked team in the country for three years, has won the Varsity 8+ national title for three straight years, 2017, 2018 & 2019, and won the Varsity 4+ national title in 2019.

There have also been 17 student-athletes from the rowing team earn All-American honors a combined 22 times since 2012.
