Bronchos Cruise Past SWOSU

EDMOND (March 4) – A host of Central Oklahoma pitchers quieted Southwestern Oklahoma's bats and Colton Bertus drove in three runs as the Bronchos cruised to an 8-2 victory Wednesday night at Wendell Simmons Field.

Seven UCO pitchers combined to give up just three hits and walk three while striking out 15 in another dominating mound performance. It's the 13th time in 16 games that the Bronchos have struck out at least 10 batters in a game.

"We used a lot of guys on the mound and they all threw pretty well," said head coach John Martin, whose team improved to 13-3 on the season. "It was good to get them the work. We didn't do a lot offensively, but it was enough to win the game."

Bertus had two hits and three RBI to lead an eight-hit offensive attack, while Zac Freeman also had two hits.

Nick Vickers started and threw three no-hit innings to earn the win. Six pitchers then worked one inning each and three of them – Brayden Nelson, Jake Terry and Beaux Bonvillain – struck out the side, while Colton Croft, Brady Smith and Kyler Patterson each fanned two batters apiece.

UCO erupted for six runs on just two hits in the second inning to seize early control, taking advantage of three walks, two errors and a hit batter.

Joe Mondragon was hit to lead off the inning, with back-to-back walks to Cacy Harper and Bennett Laurence loading the bases. Ryan Harrel drew a one-out walk to force in the first run, then Freeman's single through the right side drove in another.

Bertus followed with a sharply-hit single through the left side that plated two runs, with a pair of throwing errors on the play also allowing Freeman and Bertus to score and make it 6-0.

The Bronchos extended their lead to 8-0 in the fourth.

Dru Barrier led off with a single up the middle, Harrel had a bloop base hit to right field and both advanced on Freeman's sacrifice bunt. Barrier scooted home on a wild pitch and then Bertus delivered an line-drive RBI single to center field.

SWOSU finally got on the scoreboard in the fifth, following a two-out walk with its first hit of the game – an inside-the-park home run – that cut Central's lead to 8-2.

But that lead was more than enough as UCO's parade of pitchers mowed through SWOSU's lineup with little opposition the rest of the way.

The Bronchos return to Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play this weekend, traveling to Hays, Kan. for a three-game series with Fort Hays State that begins Friday
afternoon.
