Central Falls In MIAA Opener

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma baseball team dropped an 11-0 conference-opener Friday night, falling to the Newman Jets in the first Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association game of the 2020 season.

UCO is now 10-3 on the season after its seven-game win streak was snapped.

"We didn't play well in almost every area of the game and that was a bad outing," UCO head coach John Martin said. "We know we have to clean a lot of things up and re-focus for tomorrow because the way we played today won't get it done."

Central scattered five hits on the day and drew a pair of walks, but left everyone one base. Joe Mondragon went 2-for-3 with a pair of singles, but even he was thrown out trying to stretch one of those into a double. Philip Scott, Garrett Takamatsu and Kyle Crowl also had hits. Crowl came up injured after his double – Central's only extra-base hit in the game – and did not return.

Dylan Hall got the start Friday. After striking out 14 in his last outing and earning conference pitcher of the week honors, the senior righty had a bumpy start. Hall allowed eight runs on eight hits in four innings of work and took his first loss of the year. He's now 3-1.

Hall did strikeout five in four innings. The Bronchos still managed to strikeout 13 Newman batters on the night, extending UCO's streak of consecutive games with 10+ strikeouts to five. The Bronchos have struck out 10 or more in 11 of 13 games this season and have 160 total strikeouts through 13 games.

Brayden Nelson replaced Hall in the fifth and allowed one run on two hits. He struck out six in three innings of work. Brady Smith struck out two in 2/3 of an inning, allowing two runs on two hits. Chandler Shapard made an appearance, throwing 1/3 of an inning.

Central Oklahoma will have two more chances this weekend to make up for Friday's loss. The Bronchos host Newman at 3 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday at Wendell Simmons Field.
