UCO Whips Newman

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma baseball team jumped on Newman early Saturday and never looked back in getting an 11-3 win over the Jets in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play at Wendell Simmons Field.

The Bronchos improved to 11-3 on the season with the and are now 1-1 in league play.

"That was a good bounce back for us," UCO head coach John Martin said. "We know we didn't play well on Friday but we put that behind us and got after it today. Those are things you like to see as a coach and now we need to try and go win the series on Sunday."

Central dropped its conference-opener to Newman Friday night. The rubber match is scheduled for 1 p.m. Sunday.

Newman continued to show its offensive capabilities Saturday in the top of the first inning, putting two runs on the board in a hurry. Newman led 1-0 before an out was recorded and led 2-0 after a sacrifice fly.

UCO answered back in the bottom half of the inning with a Philip Scott solo home run. And after Newman put one more on the board in the top half, the Bronchos opened it up.

Dru Barrier led off the bottom of the second with a triple down the left field line, then Carson Green scored him with a double to right center, then Brock Schaffer scored Green with a single to left center. The latter tied the game, 3-3. Zac Freeman kept it going with four hits in four at bats, knocking a triple to left center to score Schaffer and give the Bronchos what would be the go ahead score on the afternoon.

Scott scored Freeman with a sacrifice fly to make it 5-3, Bronchos. UCO kept its foot on the gas in the next inning.

Cacy Harper led off with a walk before Barrier doubled to left field. Carson Green stepped up next and smashed his first home run of the season over the fence in left field. The three-run homer gave the Bronchos an 8-3 lead.

Garrett Takamatsu added a sacrifice fly to score Freeman and give the Bronchos a 9-3 lead. Then with the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the third inning, Harper back at the plate, a balk by the Newman pitcher allowed Scott to score and make it 10-3 UCO.

Takamatsu scored Freeman on a single in the seventh to make it 11-3.

Brayden Belden got the start for the Bronchos but would leave with a no decision. The senior lefty threw 1 2/3 innings, allowing three runs on one hit and five walks. He struck out two in the outing.

Colton Croft came on in relief for Belden and would end up with the win on the day. Croft threw 2 1/3 out of the bullpen, allowed just one hit and struck out two.

Jacob Bailey, Jake Terry, Kylar Patterson, and Beaux Bonvillain all made relief appearances. The Broncho bullpen in total allowed only four hits over 7 1/3, no runs, and issued just two walks while striking out seven. Central finished the day with nine strikeouts, which ended a season-high five-game streak with at least 10 Ks.

UCO scattered 14 hits on the day Saturday and half of those were for extra bases. Seven of nine in the lineup got at least one hit, five got multiple hits, and Green's 3-for-4 day at the plate led the way. The junior was a triple short of the cycle and had four RBIs and three runs scored.

Bertus also went 3-for-4. Freeman finished 2-for-4 with three runs scored and one RBI. Takamatsu was 2-for-5 with two RBIs. And Barrier went 2-for-5 with two runs scored.

Central Oklahoma and Newman will wrap up the three-game MIAA series Sunday at 1 p.m.
