Gilbert, Dobson Spark UCO

EDMOND (Feb. 14) – Brighton Gilbert and Lexy Dobson combined for seven hits to pace a 16-hit assault that carried Central Oklahoma past Colorado-Colorado Springs 10-5 Friday afternoon on the first day of the UCO Softball Classic.

Gilbert had three singles -- two of those on bunts -- and a double while Dobson doubled, tripled and homered as the Bronchos won their seventh straight game. UCO, now 8-5 on the season, turns around and plays Colorado Christian later Friday before playing two more games Saturday and one Sunday.

UCO jumped on top quickly, pushing across four runs on five hits in its initial at bat.

Dobson led off the bottom of the first with a double off the left field wall, Gilbert laid down a perfect bunt in front of the plate for a single and Hazel Puempel put the Bronchos on the scoreboard with a one-out RBI double to left.

Amelya Huggins then ripped a two-run single up the middle and Allie Eicher followed with an RBI single to left to make it 4-0. The Mountain Cats retaliated in the top of the second with three runs, but Central answered right back.

Audrie Morrison started the second with a blast over the left field wall for her first career home run and Dobson sent the first pitch she saw soaring the same direction for her second career homer and a 6-3 lead.

UCCS scored twice in the top of the third to pull within one and again the Bronchos responded.

Haley Pomplun led off the bottom of the third with an infield single and Morrison singled to right-center, with both advancing a base on the throw. Both runners scored an out later when Gilbert ripped a single up the middle to make it 8-5.

UCO tallied two more runs in the sixth to make it a 10-5 advantage. Eicher was hit by pitch to start that frame, Tori Ritz followed with a double to right field and Pomplun had a sacrifice fly before Dobson delivered an RBI triple to right.

Kylee Lynch threw five shutout innings in relief to pick up the pitching win. The freshman left-hander gave up just three hits and didn't walk a batter while striking out eight in improving to 4-1.
