Bronchos Fall In Extra Innings

EDMOND (Feb. 14) – Central Oklahoma couldn't take advantage of numerous mid-game scoring chances in dropping a 9-6 extra-inning decision to Colorado Christian Friday night on the first day of the UCO Softball Classic.

The Bronchos finished with 12 hits and also drew eight walks, but stranded 18 runners in the 11 inning marathon that took more than three hours to complete. UCO had a seven-game winning streak snapped, falling to 8-6 on the season.

"We had so many opportunities and just didn't come up with the timely hits that we needed," said head coach Cody White, whose team returns for games at 2 and 4 p.m. Saturday. "It's disappointing, but we just have to put it behind us and focus on tomorrow."

The Bronchos left the bases loaded twice and stranded two runners in in five other innings in addition to having a runner thrown out on a close play at the plate in the sixth.

Brighton Gilbert led the offensive attack with a 3-for-5 performance, giving her seven hits on the day. Lexy Dobson and Audrie Morrison had two hits apiece.

The Cougars hit a two-run homer in the top of the first to grab a quick 2-0 lead, with UCO getting one back in its first turn at the plate.

Gilbert – who went 4-for-5 in Central's first-game win over Colorado-Colorado Springs – had a one-out bloop single and later scored when Allie Eicher drew a bases-loaded walk.

The Bronchos moved in front with a three-run third, which Hazel Puempel started with a lead-off homer off the scoreboard in left-center field. Eicher walked with one out, Haley Pomplun had a two-out single to right and Morrison drove them both in with a triple to left-center to put UCO on top 4-3.

CCU tied it with a run in the fifth and it stayed that way until the game went to the international tiebreaker in the 10th when the Cougars used a hit and a key error to score two runs in taking a 6-4 lead.

But the Bronchos wouldn't go away.

Morrison was placed on second to start the inning per tiebreaker rules and quickly raced around to score on Dobson's lead-off double down the left field line. Gilbert reached on a bunt single that moved Dobson to third and Halley Randolph's sacrifice fly tied it again.

Colorado Christian came right back with three more runs in the 11th and this time UCO couldn't answer.
