Bronchos Fall In Season Opener

CONROE, Texas (Jan. 31) – Fielding miscues put Central Oklahoma in an early bind and the No. 7-ranked Bronchos never recovered in falling to No. 2 Texas A&M-Kingsville 4-1 in the first game of the season-opening Arkansas Tech Winter Invitational Friday morning.

UCO committed two errors in the top of the second inning and the Javelinas turned those mistakes into four unearned runs in taking control. The Bronchos were stymied offensively, managing only three hits.

"We made a couple of mistakes and you can't do that against really good teams," head coach Cody White said. "I thought we battled hard. The girls didn't get down after we got behind and they kept fighting."

Central will have another tough test this afternoon, taking on No. 10 Texas A&M-Commerce at 3 p.m. The Bronchos play two games again both Saturday and Sunday.

TAMUK -- last year's national runner-up -- didn't score again after the faithful second, but that 4-0 lead was enough for pitcher Brenna Smith. Smith was a first-team All-Lone Star Conference pick last year after going 22-4 with a 1.97 earned run average.

UCO didn't have a base runner until Haley Pomplun reached on an infield single in the third inning and the Bronchos scored their lone run in the sixth.

Tori Ritz led off that inning with a walk, Brighton Gilbert moved pinch-runner Audrie Morrison to second with an infield single and Morrison scored on Hazel Puempel's two-out hit to right field.

Corrina Rivas took the pitching loss for UCO, giving up eight hits and the four unearned runs in going the first four innings. Freshman Kylee Lynch threw three shutout innings to close out the game, allowing two hits.
