UCO Setter Position In Good Hands

The 2019 volleyball season is right around the corner for Central Oklahoma and the Bronchos -- who have won 145 matches over the past five years – are primed to continue their successful ways.

Today is the last position preview of this year's squad with a look at the setters.

It's a two-person battle between junior Ericka Scholl and sophomore Amanda Desch for the starting spot as both players have shown they can handle the job, though Central could also use the two-setter system that it employed most of last year.

Scholl led the team in assists last year with 665 (5.94/set) while splitting time as the main setter, collecting 20-plus assists in 21 matches. She also racked up 41 aces as one of the top servers in the conference and added 232 digs.

Desch opened last season as the starting setter and had 59 assists in the first two matches before moving to right-side hitter, going on to earn honorable mention All-MIAA recognition. She finished with 136 kills, 124 assists, 91 digs and 36 total blocks in displaying tremendous all-around skills.

"It remains to be seen if we run a 6-2 like we did last year or we could run a 5-1 based on our offensive potential," head coach Edgar Miraku said. "Ericka and Amanda both had great spring off-seasons for us and we feel confident with either one running the ship."

The Bronchos, who went 27-7 last year, open the season Sept. 6-7 with four matches at the Eckerd Invitational in St. Petersburg, Fla. Central will host Oklahoma Baptist on Sept. 11 in the home opener.
