UCO Volleyball Team Ready To Start Practice

Ten returning players and eight newcomers will report for duty Tuesday as the Central Oklahoma volleyball team begins preparing for the fast-approaching season.

The Bronchos of eighth-year head coach Edgar Miraku will have meetings and undergo physicals Tuesday before holding their first practice at 9 a.m. Wednesday at Hamilton Field House. UCO will go through two-a-day workouts the rest of the week before starting their regular practice schedule when the fall semester opens next Monday.

"It's an exciting time for us and we're ready to get started," said Miraku, who has a 182-55 career record at Central. "We have a lot of freshmen coming in, but there's also a good group of returners and hopefully that will help speed up the learning curve.

"There's a lot of excitement with this group. They know we have a lot of work to do and everybody is eager to get going."

The Bronchos are coming off a 27-7 season, their fifth straight year with at least 25 wins. Seven of the 10 returning players started at least eight matches a year ago.

UCO will go to Tulsa for an exhibition match Aug. 24, hold a series of scrimmages the following week and then open the season Sept. 6-7 with four matches at the Eckerd Invitational in St. Petersburg, Fla.

The Bronchos make their home debut on Wednesday, Sept. 11 against Oklahoma Baptist.
