UCO Splits With Oklahoma Baptist

SHAWNEE, Okla. – The University of Central Oklahoma baseball team split a non-conference road doubleheader Tuesday at Oklahoma Baptist, falling 16-1 in the first game before returning for an 11-2 win in the nightcap. The Bronchos moved to 11-7 on the season with the split.

"They jumped on us in the first game and we just really weren't prepared," UCO head coach John Martin said. "I'm proud of the guys for the way they responded in the second game, but we really have to be better at being ready in every game and in every inning."

Central Oklahoma jumped out to a 1-0 lead in Game 1 of Tuesday's doubleheader. Kyle Miskovsky walked, and soon after crossed the plate when Paul Kropf smacked a one-out double to right center.

However, Oklahoma Baptist answered back. The Bison scored two in the first, and four in the second off starter Ryan McCollough. OBU put two more on in the third before McCollough was replaced by Connor Sweeney, who was replaced by Drake Harper, in a nine-run third inning that put Central down 15-1.

UCO managed just four hits in the first game. Kropf's double was the only extra-base hit. Miskovksy, Jake Dyer, and Taylor Avila also got base knocks.

Miskovksy improved his streak of reaching base safely in every game this season. He has a seven- and an eight-game hit streak. Despite going 0-for-4 in the second game, he walked twice to move that reached-base streak to 24 games overall dating back to last season. Dyer improved his team-high 14-game hit streak.

McCollough threw two innings, allowing nine hits and eight runs – all earned. He did strike out five. Sweeney threw 1/3 of an inning. Harper threw 2/3.

Tabor Charles settled the Bronchos down despite the damage having been done. He threw two innings, allowing one hit and no runs. Ryan McCourt threw for the first time since 2016. He threw one inning, allowing one hit and the final run.

UCO turned it around in a hurry in the Game 2. The Bronchos opened the game with a seven-run top of the first inning. The Bronchos plated seven with just two hits.

Miskovsky walked to lead off the inning and made it 1-0 when he scored on a passed ball. The Bronchos had two batters hit in the inning and four draw walks. Cole Sanderson belted a three-RBI double and Xavier Warren scored him with an RBI-single to make it 7-0.

The Bronchos got two more in the top of the second. T.J. Sparr, Bryant Klusener, and Cole Sanderson all earned walks with one out in the inning. Sparr and Klusener each scored on separate wild pitches.

After two, UCO had nine runs on just two hits. The Bronchos wouldn't get another hit until Trae Smith snuck a single through the right side in the sixth. He scored two batters later when Klusener singled to left field.

Sparr reached on fielder's choice between Smith and Klusener. He scored on a sacrifice-fly by Taylor Avila that made it 11-2 Bronchos.

On the mound, starter JJ Rogers had a strong outing. He threw four innings of five-hit baseball, allowing just one run and no walks. Tuesday was Rogers' fifth start of the season. He improved to 3-0 on the season with the win.

Landon Bond came on in relief of Rogers in the fifth, but he was replaced after just 1/3 of an inning. Ben Wusterbarth replaced Bond with runners on first and second.

Wusterbarth struck out the first batter for the second out of the inning, and almost got out of the jam before OBU added its second run of the game on a fielding error. He did get the next batter to pop-out to shortstop to get out of the inning with UCO up 9-2.

He returned with an 11-2 lead in the bottom of the sixth and got a 1-2-3 inning. Josh Rutland came on to close it out for the Bronchos.

Central Oklahoma returns home after five away games. The Bronchos host Southwest Baptist in a Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association this weekend at Wendell Simmons Field beginning Friday at 2 p.m.
