Bronchos Fall to Lindenwood

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma baseball team dropped an 8-6 decision to Lindenwood Friday afternoon in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association action at Wendell Simmons Field.

The Bronchos fell to 22-10 on the season with the loss, and are now 15-4 in the MIAA, still good for first place. Lindenwood is 14-15 overall and 7-11 in league play.

"We didn't do a good job of hitting the ball today," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "We didn't pitch very well either. We didn't give ourselves much of a chance. We need to go out tomorrow and finish the series strong and play to our potential."

Lindenwood jumped out to a 3-0 lead on the Bronchos Friday with a big second inning. A leadoff single and two walks loaded the bases for the Lions before UCO starter Gaylon Viney recorded the first out of the inning. Viney though issued another walk to score the first run of the game.

UCO then made a quick turn to the bullpen, calling in J.D. Cameron for relief. Cameron, inheriting an 2-0 count, walked in another run to make it 2-0 Lindenwood. The Lions made it 3-0 with a fielder's choice that got the second out of the inning.

UCO answered with one run back in the bottom of the second when Bryant Klusener scored on a bases-loaded wild pitch to make it 3-1. The Bronchos then took the lead with a big third inning.

Paul Kropf led off with a double, then Dayne Sommer drew a walk. Trae Smith scored Kropf, who moved to third on a passed ball, with a sacrifice fly to make it 3-2. The Xaiver Freeman scored Sommer and Klusener to make it 4-3 Bronchos with a double down the left field line.

Cameron gave up another run in the fourth though to tie it up. He gave up a leadoff double, followed by a single. He rolled up a double play to get one of the runners off the bases, but the leadoff run scored on that to make it 4-4.

Again, UCO responded. In the bottom of the fifth, Sommer led off with a solo home run to give the Bronchos a 5-4 lead.

The back and forth continued though.

Cameron walked the leadoff batter in the sixth, and then gave up a single to put two runners on. Martin went to the bullpen again and brought in Tabor Charles, who got the first out of the inning when the Lindenwood batter bunted back to Charles. He fired a shot over to third to get the force out.

Charles got the next batter to pop-out to Smith at first base, and Martin went back to the pen and brought in Drake Harper. Harper gave up a three-run home run on the next at bat and Lindenwood led 7-5.

Lindenwood extended its lead to 8-5 in the top of the seventh. And Jake Dyer hit a solo home run in the bottom of the eighth to bring the score to its final, 8-6.

Harper took the loss on the day, moving to 0-1 on the season. UCO had just six hits on the day, and all came from six different batters. The Bronchos struck out 10 times at the plate Friday.

The rubber match in the series is scheduled for Saturday afternoon. Game 3 will begin at 1 p.m. at Wendell Simmons Field.
