UCO Beats Lindenwood Saturday

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma baseball team won its sixth conference series in as many tries Saturday when a 4-1 win over Lindenwood gave the Bronchos two of three in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association series at Wendell Simmons Field.

The Bronchos improved to 24-10 overall on the season and are now 16-4 in league games, which is good enough for first place.

"To win the series is good," UCO head coach John Martin said. "We didn't play very good on Friday and we lost, and I don't think we played great today, but we got the win. We had a couple of guys come up big for us and that helped. We had a really good start from Austin Lambright too and that helped a lot."

Lambright made his first start of the season following 13 relief appearances. He threw five solid innings of work, allowing just one earned run on two hits and a walk. Lambright struck out nine of 19 batters faced in the effort.

UCO got two big triples from Justin Brown, one of them scored a run, and he scored on the next play after both of his shots to deep right center. UCO also got a solo home run from Trae Smith.

Lindenwood struck first Saturday. Neil Fischer hit a solo home run off Lambright in the top of the second inning. But that would be all for the Lions, who finished with just three hits on the day.

D.J. Gasso scored UCO's first run of the game, and tying run, in the bottom of the fifth inning. He led off with a walk, and after Bryce West struck out for the first out of the inning, Brown stepped up and delivered. He smacked a 1-2 pitch into the gap in right center for a triple, scoring Gasso and tying the game 1-1.

On the next at bat, Jake Dyer hit a high-chopper groundball to third base. There was no play at the plate as Brown cruised home and gave UCO a 2-1 lead.

Smith hit his homer in the bottom of the sixth, also a 1-2 pitch that he sent over the wall in right field to make it 3-1 Bronchos.

After Brown hit another triple with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, and Lindenwood made its first move to the bullpen on the day, a passed ball scored Brown to make it 4-1 Bronchos.

Tyler Culver relieved Lambright in the top of the sixth and threw two scoreless innings of work. He struck out three in that effort. Ben Wusterbarth walked a batter and gave up a hit in the eighth but got through his one inning of work without allowing a run.

Josh Rutland came on in the ninth to close out the game and earn his fourth save of the season. He walked one, but struck out two, including the final batter of the game.

Central Oklahoma has played seven straight at home and will close out its eight-game homestand on Tuesday when the Bronchos host Missouri Southern at 3 p.m.
