Bronchos blank Northeastern in doubleheader sweep

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – The University of Central Oklahoma softball team swept Northeastern State with a pair of shutouts Saturday in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association action.

Two runs were enough in the first game as the Bronchos (38-8, 18-4) got 12 strikeouts from Jayden Chestnut to shut down the Riverhawks. The sophomore, who won national player of the week honors last week after three shutouts and a perfect game, recorded a season-high 12 K's and allowed just three hits and one walk.

"Jayden was dominant again today," UCO head coach Cody White said. "We didn't do very well at all hitting the ball, but when you have a pitcher throwing like that, she covered for us."

Chestnut hit double-digit strikeouts for the fourth time this season. She threw 10 in the first game of the season. Saturday is also the second consecutive game she has thrown at least 10 strikeouts.

Morgan Heard opened the game with a single up the middle in the top of the first. Carrie Abrams then reached on an error when the Northeastern State third baseman couldn't field Abrams' bunt. JoBi Heath then beat out an infield single, and Tori Collet walked with the bases loaded to give score Heard and give the Bronchos a 1-0 first inning lead.

The game remained that way until the fifth. That's when Heard struck again.

The junior shortstop looked at a strike, and then took a ball. On the third pitch, Heard smashed her team-leading 12th homer of the season over the left field fence to make it 2-0. Heard finished 2 of 4 to lead the Broncho offense in the first game.

Peyton Walker got the start for the Bronchos in the second game and was just as dominant. The junior pitcher helped the Bronchos earn their NCAA-leading 21st shutout of the season after throwing seven innings. Walker earned her 10th complete-game shutout this season, which also ranks among the nation's best.

Heard led off the second game as she did the first, with a single in the top of the first. And like the first game, her teammates kept it going behind her.

Abrams did pop-up on the next at bat, but the following at bat, Heath smacked a single to left field, advanced to second on the throw, and moved Heard to third.

Northeastern picked up the second out of the inning when Collet struck out, but then Carli Jones dropped a two-RBI double in left field to make it 2-0 Central. Brooke Zukerman then hit home Jones on the next at bat to make it 3-0.

Heard, Abrams, Heath and Jones each collected two hits to lead UCO in game two.

That was all the offense the Bronchos could get out of Saturday's action. But, as White said, with pitching like UCO is getting out of Chestnut and Walker, you don't have to score a ton of runs.

Central Oklahoma enters the final week of the regular season with six games left on the schedule. UCO will host St. Mary's (Texas) for two on Wednesday before heading to Missouri Southern and Pittsburg State next weekend for its final contests.

The Bronchos are currently in first place in the MIAA, with the conference tournament beginning Thursday, April 27 in Oklahoma City.
