Bronchos Split Games In Missouri

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (March 17) – Peyton Walker threw a three-hit shutout to lead Central Oklahoma past Winona State 2-0 as the No. 9-ranked Bronchos earned a split of their first two games in the Hy-Vee Classic here Friday afternoon.

UCO dropped a tough 6-5 extra-inning decision to Augustana in Friday's opener, snapping a seven-game winning streak.

The Bronchos, now 14-4 on the season, return to action Saturday at 10 a.m. against Upper Iowa before facing Wayne State at 4 p.m.  UCO concludes the three-day event with Sunday games against Mary at 9 a.m. and Sioux Falls at 1 p.m.

"We didn't play with much consistency and made too many mistakes that really hurt us," head coach Cody White said.  "We've just got to keep getting better and tomorrow is another chance for us to do that."

Walker had another dominating outing against Winona State to help the Bronchos rebound from their opening loss.  The junior right-hander struck out two and walked two in tossing her sixth shutout of the season, improving to 9-1.

Brooke Zukerman provided the only run Walker would need with a lead-off solo home run in the second inning.  UCO added an insurance run in the fifth when Morgan Heard doubled, went to third on an error and scored on Carrie Abrams' base hit.

The Bronchos managed just six hits, getting two apiece from Heard and Zukerman.

UCO trailed Augustana 4-1 after two innings of the first game, but got close on Tori Collet's two-run single in the third and tied it in the bottom of the seventh.  Abrams led off that last-ditch rally with a triple and trotted home on JoBi Heath's single.

Augie scored once in the top of the eighth to move back in front, but the Bronchos tied it again in the bottom of that frame on Ashleigh Tramel's RBI single.  UCO loaded the bases with two outs, but was unable to plate the winning run.

The Vikings went back ahead in the top of the ninth with a single run and this time UCO had no answer.

Abrams and Heath had three hits each to pace a 12-hit attack, though the Bronchos left 11 runners on base.  Heard, Collet and Tramel added two hits apiece.
