Bronchos Open Season With Two Wins

DURANT, Okla. (Feb. 3) – Peyton Walker threw a six-hit shutout in her Central Oklahoma debut to lead the No. 20-ranked Bronchos past Texas A&M International 3-0 here Friday afternoon at the Southeastern Oklahoma Invitational.

UCO rolled over Eastern New Mexico 9-1 in its first game of the day as Brooke Zukerman and Tori Collet drove in three runs apiece before Walker keyed the second game win.

The junior right-hander -- who didn't play last year after spending two years in a relief role at Oklahoma State -- went the distance in the circle against the Dustdevils, scattering six hits while striking out five and walking two in a 105-pitch outing.

"I was really proud of the way Peyton came through for us today," said head coach Cody White, whose team plays one game Saturday before finishing the three-day event with two games Sunday.  "To go out and throw like that after having not pitched last year was impressive.  She never got rattled and was in control the whole game.

"We didn't have our best day at the plate, but we came out with two wins so we'll take that and move on."

The Bronchos scored the only runs they would need against TAMUI in the bottom of the first inning.  Carrie Abrams drew a one-out walk and JoBi Heath followed with a towering blast over the center field wall to make it 2-0.

Abrams scored again in the third when she led off with a bunt single and took second on an error before eventually scoring on Zukerman's two-out bloop single to center field.

UCO didn't commit and error in the contest and got two fine defensive plays from third baseman Lexi Watson, one coming in the second with runners on second and third that prevented the Dustdevils from getting on the scoreboard.  Zukerman also threw a runner out at third from her right field position to stem a threat.

Seven players had one hit apiece for the Bronchos.

Collet led UCO's 11-hit attack in the opener with a 3-for-4, three-RBI performance at the plate.  Zukerman, who played just the first four games last year before going out with injury, had two hits and three RBI and Watson also had two hits.

The Bronchos took advantage of three ENMU errors in the first two innings to seize quick control in the season-opener, pushing across seven runs on five hits.

Heath reached on a two-out error to keep the first inning alive and Watson followed with a walk before Collet plated both runners with a triple over the right fielder's head.  Zukerman then made it 3-0 with a sharply-hit single to center.

Morgan Head started the second inning with a first-pitch home run to left field, a massive shot that easily cleared the fence to ignite a four-run volley.  Two errors helped UCO's cause, with the Bronchos also getting an RBI double from Zukerman and run-scoring fielder's choice from Heath.

The Greyhounds trimmed the lead to 7-1 in the third and it stayed that way until UCO scored twice in the sixth to reach the eight-run rule.

Heath roped a one-out double off the fence in left field to get things started, went to third on Watson's single through the left side and scored on Collet's base hit that moved Watson to third.  Zukerman then made it 9-1 with a run-scoring fielder's choice.

Abbie Lancaster put the Greyhounds down in order in the bottom of the sixth to finish off the win.  The sophomore right-hander earned the pitching win, giving up just three hits and one run while striking out five in 4 2/3 innings of relief work.

UCO plays just once Saturday, meeting St. Edward's at 2:30 p.m., and then finish the three-day event Sunday with games against Rockhurst (noon) and Midwestern State (5 p.m.).
