UNK Hands Bronchos Tough Loss

Box Score

EDMOND (Feb. 19) –
Central Oklahoma wasted a pair of prime scoring opportunities and ended up dropping a tough 5-4 decision to Nebraska-Kearney Thursday afternoon in the home debut at Wendell Simmons Field.

The Bronchos failed to score after loading the bases with no outs and a 4-3 lead in the fifth inning, then didn't score in the seventh with the bases full and one out while facing a 5-4 deficit in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association opener for both teams.

UCO fell to 1-5 on the season and 0-1 in the league, while the Lopers improved to 6-5 and 1-0.  The teams meet for a 12 p.m. doubleheader Friday before finishing the four-game series with a single game at 1 p.m.Saturday.

"We had some good scoring opportunities and just didn't take advantage of them," head coach Dax Leone said.  "It was a tough, hard-fought game that we came up a little short in, but the good thing is we get two more cracks at them tomorrow."

The Bronchos led 4-3 in the fifth after Tyler Hatcher's lead-off home run and then loaded the bases with a double by Josh Ingram, a walk to Brad McDonald and an infield hit by Jake O'Brien.  A strikeout and double play ended that inning, with UNK then taking a 5-4 lead in the top of the sixth on a two-run homer.

UCO's final chance to regain the lead came in the seventh when one-out singles by Ingram and McDonald and a walk to O'Brien loaded the bases.  But the Bronchos couldn't take advantage as a strikeout and pop up thwarted the threat.

The Bronchos took a 3-2 lead in the third when Jacob Borrego and Hatcher dew lead-off walks and Ingram deposited a ball deep over the fence in right-center field for his first homer of the season.

The Lopers tied it with a solo homer in the fourth and Hatcher gave UCO a 4-3 lead with his moon shot to center field, but the Bronchos didn't score again.

Ingram had three of UCO's seven hits in the contest.
