UCO Hosts Newman Firday

Bronchos Finish Three-Match MIAA Homestand Against the Jets

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma wraps up a three-match MIAA homestand Friday when the Bronchos host Newman for a 6 p.m. contest at Hamilton Field House.

UCO is 12-5 on the season and 2-2 in league play, while the Jets are 6-12 and 1-3. It's the first of two meetings in five days between the two teams, with the Bronchos going to Wichita, Kansas next Tuesday for a non-conference match.

"We played well last weekend and need to keep up the momentum," head coach Edgar Miraku said. "Every match is crucial in our league. We have to be ready to play each time we step on the court."

Central notched two big wins last week, sweeping Missouri Southern before topping Central Missouri in four sets the next night to overcome a 0-2 conference start.

Morgan Manning stepped in at libero for injured All-American Kaitlyn Parrott and was superb in leading the back row to earn MIAA Defensive Player of the Week honors. The sophomore dug up 51 attacks (7.29/set), making a career-high 24 digs against MSSU before besting that with 27 the next night in the UCM win.

Myla Unterweger had 25 kills in the two matches, while Georgia Ahlert hit .321 with 24 kills and seven total blocks.

Those two continue to be a one-two punch that sparks the UCO offense.

Ahlert has a team-high 176 kills and ranks among the league leaders in hitting percentage at .315 to go along with 28 total blocks. Unterweger has 172 kills with 22 blocks and 13 service aces.

Two other players have 100-plus kills in Kate Wells (124) and Caroline Clayton (102). Wells also tops the team in solo (12), assisted (56) and total blocks (68) to rank among the best in the MIAA.

Riley Roberts does a little bit of everything for the Bronchos in directing the offensive attack from her setter post. The senior has dished out 549 assists (9.15/set) while having also recorded 162 digs, 56 kills, 27 blocks and 12 aces.

Parrott averages 5.28 digs per set from her libero spot, having piled up 285 on the season. Manning's big weekend has her up to 195 digs for the season, a 3.20 per-set average.

Newman got back on the winning track Tuesday with a four-set non-conference win over Northwestern Oklahoma. Isabella Lamb (138 kills, 32 blocks) and Priscilla Raschen (117 kills, 11 blocks) led the Jets.

UCO has dominated the series, holding a 17-1 lead.
