Bronchos Conquer Central Missouri

UCO Downs Jennies In Four Sets

EDMOND - Georgia Ahlert knocked down 10 of her match-high 14 kills in the final two sets and Central Oklahoma finished off Central Missouri with a final-set blitz to capture a key MIAA triumph Friday night at Hamilton Field House.

The Bronchos sandwiched 25-22 wins around a 25-18 second-set loss before overwhelming the Jennies 25-13 in the fourth set to claim their ninth straight home victory dating back to last season. UCO improved to 12-5 overall and 2-2 in the league.

"I was really proud of our team tonight," head coach Edgar Miraku said. "They came out focused and it was a total team effort. That was a big win over a very good Central Missouri team."

Ahlert led UCO's balanced offensive attack, finishing with 14 kills after having just four through the first two sets. The sophomore middle blocker added six total blocks in leading Central's aggressive play at the net.

Myla Unterweger contributed 12 kills and three blocks, while Kate Wells hit .348 with nine kills and four blocks. Brylee Moore also had nine kills with a big solo block and Taylor Fenton chipped in seven kills.

Do-it-all setter Riley Roberts handed out 44 assists - her fifth 40-plus assist outing of the season - along with five blocks, eight digs and two kills. Morgan Manning dug up 27 UCM attacks to surpass the career-high 24 she had in Thursday's sweep of Missouri Southern and Emma Halstead added a career-best 19 digs.

UCO led most of the way in the first set and had a six-point advantage at 15-9 on Roberts' dump kill at the net, but the Jennies came back to tie it at 20-all. Moore broke that deadlock with a shot down the line and Unterweger followed with a kill to make it 22-20 before UCM scored.

Another Unterweger kill pushed the lead to 23-21, a UCM error made it 24-22 and the Jennies stayed alive with a block. Unterweger then finished off her late surge with a bullet down the middle to give the Bronchos the set.

Central Missouri took charge down the stretch to pull away for its 25-18 win in the second set to tie the match, but the Bronchos answered with a hard-fought win in the third.

There were 11 ties and six lead changes in the third set as neither team led by more than three. Ahlert collected six kills and Wells five to lead UCO, which broke away from a 20-20 tie on three straight errors by the Jennies. Wells hammered down the final two kills to finish off the 25-22 win.

The Bronchos had a 9-4 lead in the fourth set before UCM rallied to get close at 10-9. It was all UCO from there.

Halstead was on serve on spark an 8-0 run that gave the Bronchos a commanding 18-9 cushion, delivering an ace while also collecting a rare kill off a dig during that stretch. UCO coasted in from there, getting two kills from Unterweger and one each from Ahlert and Fenton to polish off the match.

The Bronchos finish off their three-match homestand next Friday, hosting Newman at 6 p.m. in another MIAA contest.
